Akara
"Father," I greeted my adoptive father with a slight bow.
"Is it done?" Mr. Aof asked, his eyes on the plaster on my arm.
"Yes, father, the doctor left already," I confirmed.
Mr. Aof's son, Rune, had a very rare illness called AXT-1 and he needed a transfusion every three months to live a quality life. As I had the reserved illness, AXT+1, I was his donor. Interestingly, AXT+1 was pretty cool to have. It made me kind of a superhuman; I never got tired no matter how active I was, never been sick more than a day and healed very quickly.
Compared to me, Rune was pretty hapless, or so I was told. He was physically very weak and got tired easily. Although the illness was not fatal, lack of transfusion caused convulsions, nosebleeds, even fainting. When this illness combined with Rune's mother's death, it wasn't surprising for Mr. Aof to dote on Rune. He was coddled to the extreme and never heard the word 'no'.
Mr. Aof nodded with satisfaction and gestured at me to sit on the chair opposite of his. As it was an unusual gesture, I guessed he had something important to tell me. Interlocking his fingers on the table, he said "you already know Rune has only one semester to graduate, right?"
I nodded. Rune was three years younger than me and was studying Tourism and Hotel Management, following his father's profession. Me? Mr. Aof said I didn't need to go to university as I was more useful as his bodyguard. Well, it was true that I wasn't that smart, so I found his decision appropriate.
"As he wished I let him live alone for this semester, but as you know, I can't leave him alone, I have too many enemies for that."
I kept my silence as I had no idea why he had that many enemies, maybe it was because he was rich, I didn't know.
Heaving a sigh, Mr. Aof continued. "I have received a threat letter for my son today and he hasn't left the house yet!" he shouted as he threw the crumbled letter on the table. "Akara, my son, as you know, you are the only person I trust fully, so I want you to be Rune's bodyguard until he comes back home."
Okay, that was new. Previously, Mr. Aof forbade me to meet his son, but now he wanted me to be his bodyguard!
"What do you say?" he asked me as if I could defy him.
"As you wish, father," I said and he reached forward to pat my arm.
"Very well..."
