Every year was no different than the last. Day and night Lan Wanji, one of the proud jades of the Lan Clan, would suffer from night terrors. They were nothing new. However, they were always filled with his most greatest fear. Losing the one he loved. After the siege on the burial mounds, and after he had received his punishment, he would refuse to believe that Wei Wuxian was dead. Even when his brother told him. When his uncle told him. When everyone around him would celebrate that the Yiling Patriarch was finally dead, he would refuse to believe it. The truth stared at him right in the face, and yet he would refuse to believe it.

Everyday his thoughts would be invaded by nothing but his memories of the past before the Wens' had attacked. He would look back to the good memories and all the times that he had gone out of his way to avoid Wei Wuxian. In the beginning, he could not stand the sight of him, but with time he came to somewhat enjoy his company. He would never show it, nor would he say it out loud. He wanted nothing more than to help save him, when he went missing. He wanted to lock him away when he returned. He wanted to just keep him close by so that he could help him. But it was not what he wanted, so how could he say no to him? There was nothing he could do to change his mind. In the end, he could only regret his mistake of not being there at his side.

With so many thoughts swirling through his head, he would often dream of those same memories. And every time he did he would end his dreams with the last battle between them, leaving him to awaken with a cold sweat.

After Wei Wuxian had returned to the world, not once did he leave his side. This time he would protect him, listen to him, and spoil him. He wanted to bring him the kind of happiness that he could not provide back then. But even when he was beside him everyday once more, he would still awaken with the fear of losing his beloved again.

As the night had once again come, Lan Wanji and Wei Wuxian stood together preparing to sleep.

"Ah, Lan Zhan, Lan Zhan I have a question I wanted to ask you,"

"Hm? What is it?"

"Mmm...well this has happened a couple of times whenever I have attempted to bother you and sleep with you, but whenever you catch me and make me sleep with you, there would sometimes be moments when I can hear your heart rate go up while you're sleeping. Sometimes I hear you...whimpering..? I just wanna know if you...have nightmares often...?"

Lan Wanji turns to him and stares at him. He didn't say anything, and his expressions never changed either.

"Lan Zhan...?"

"There's no need to be concerned about anything. Go to bed." He looks away from him and frowns slightly. Wei Wuxian tilts his head and watches him from behind. He knew that he wouldn't say anything, but there's no way he was going to drop the subject.

"If you won't say anything then I won't pressure you, but I am not letting this go. Soo I'm going to sleep with you tonight," he says with a grin and plants himself onto the bed. He holds his head up with his hand and smiles at him.

"If I keep you company, maybe you won't have such a nightmare?"

Lan Wanji sighs a bit and doesn't reject his offer. As he was growing tired, as his body clock was beginning to make him sleep. He blows out the candles in the room and just lays on the bed and pulls the cover up over the two. Wei Wuxian blinks and just stares at him in the dark. He wanted to catch him flinch. Wanted to see if he would actually wake up from something that was disturbing his mind. He felt that perhaps it was because of something in the past, or maybe it may had something to do with him. Ever since he heard while he was drunk, that he regretted not being by his side in the past, he always believed that maybe Lan Wanji was really trying to pay a debt to him. But it was debt he himself created. Not a debt that Wei Wuxian held above his head. He didn't want him to feel guilty, nor did he want him to feel as if he owed him.

"Lan Zhan...?" he calls, but he did not respond. He was completely asleep.

He waited, and waited. Nothing happened. Perhaps he was just seeing and hearing things before. He lays on his back and sighs softly.

'Maybe, he doesn't have nightmares...'

Just as he is about to fall into a deep sleep, he feels a pair of strong arms wrap entirely around his waist. He tries to move, but is unable to break free. He glances over his shoulder to the man beside him as his breath gets caught up in his throat. The look on Lan Wanji's face was a look he had never seen before. It was a look that screamed terror, fear, and anguish. His face dripped with a bit of sweat as his voice started to slip from his lips quietly.

"Lan Zhan...Lan Zhan wake up please..." he says quietly as he struggles to break free from his grip. But his voice was unable to be heard.

"Lan Zhan..! Wake up..!"

"Wei Ying....."

He pauses in his struggle and turns his whole body to him. He leans in closer to him and listens to his voice.

"Wei Ying...don't....go..."

Wei Wuxian frowns and watches his expression change from fear to sadness. Tears were now swelling up in his eyes, as his body trembled.

"Lan Zhan..." he hesitates, but then lifts his hand to his cheek.

The moment his hand touches the surface of his cheek, his eyes flash open with his breath caught in his throat. His hands suddenly release him as he sits up and takes a moment to breathe. Wei Wuxian sits up as well and turns to him with worry.

"Lan Zhan...."

Wanji turns his face away and attempts to hide his tears that were pouring down his cheeks. However, Wei Wuxian did not want him to hide from him, especially when his nightmare was about him specifically. He goes and circles around standing before him. He lifts his head and lightly brushes his thumbs against the droplets that were flowing from those golden eyes. For as long as he had lived, these very eyes would be cold, angered, or filled with annoyance. But at the moment they were filled with a sense of grievance.

"I....I really scared you....back then didn't I? I didn't think that even your dreams would be plagued so deeply like this. I'm sorry..."

Lan Wanji closes his eyes and sighs lightly without a response.

"I'm not going anywhere this time....I promise..."

"You won't..."

"Hm...?"

Those same golden eyes reopened and this time they were filled with determination.

"You won't....because I will protect you this time..."

"Lan Zhan...."

Before he could say more, however his head had already leaned over onto his stomach as he had already passed out once more. Wei Wuxian sighs.

"The body clocks of you Lan members..." he sighs and carefully lays him back on the bed and carefully lifts the front strands of his hair. He straightens them out along his chest and smiles softly.

"Seriously...Lan Zhan....you fuddy duddy....you really are jus too great...."

.....I LITERALLY WAS DYING TO TRY AND GET THIS TO BE CUTE...BUT MY BRAIN DIDN'T AGREE WITH ME.
