that night, after we all got back home from the restaurant, my dad thanked me, kissing my head before moving up the stairs as i sighed, leaning my back against the kitchen counter.
"you did good today." my mom told me, undoing her tie. "it's like you never left."
"it felt like i never left." i shrugged.
"you were always such a good worker at the restaurant." she smiled and stepped towards me, pushing baby hairs from my face. "thank you for your hard work tonight, i know that last table kicked your butt."
"it's the least i could do, mom." i told her. she nodded before stepping back.
"get some sleep tonight."
"i will," i told her but she was already up the stairs. i pulled my phone out of my apron, seeing i had a text and a notification from instagram. i unlocked my phone, clicking on the text and see it was from an unknown number. all it read was, "it's rafe." i snorted before typing in a "it's ainsley," before going to instagram and seeing he'd followed me on instagram, along with sarah. i pressed the follow back button for both of them before clicking on sarah's profile. i scrolled through, seeing a lot of pictures of her and the boy she's snuck off from the party with. john b, they were dating and had been for a while. i saw a picture of her, katie, noelle, another girl and cami all sat on a bed, smiling wide. i looked at the date, seeing it was posted the same night cami had posted her last post on her page.
i scrolled through some more of her post before coming to one of her, katie, wheezie, noelle, the other girl, topper, rafe, beck, another boy, gracelynn and a bunch of adults. they were all smiling wide and were sat at a dinner table. the location was tagged in iceland. rafe had his arm around gracelynn, leaning close to her as she looked at him, laughing. across the table you could see topper watching them, well, more of a glare. i scrolled to the caption, reading a simple, "family times five."
that's when i got another text, i clicked on it, letting it bring me to the messages between rafe and i.
"very cute, you busy?" was all this one said. i clicked on the message bar, sending a "it depends message."
i made a new contact, putting in his name before i walked up the stairs and into my room. i took a quick shower, just washing my body before changing into a pair of shorts and a long t-shirt that covered the shorts entirely. i climbed on my bed, grabbing my phone and seeing rafe had sent a "come over," with an address attached.
i looked out my window, seeing it was pitch black, then looked at the time, ten p.m. if i went, i'd be sure to get caught, taking a car from the garage. but i wasn't tired and i didn't really care. i pushed myself up, grabbing all the tips i'd gotten from work today, shoving them in my back pocket. i grabbed a pair of vans before hurrying back down the stairs. i grabbed the keys and slid my shoes on, stepping into the garage. i opened the door and took of, driving down the driveway and letting my phone take me to the address, which was only a couple streets away. i pulled into a house, that was lit up and scattered with more teenagers.
"jesus, another party?" i asked, parking the car and climbing out, locking it. i shoved my phone in my pocket before going inside.
"ainsley!" i saw sarah as she smiled, standing next to the girl i didn't know. "this is kie." she introduced. "i didn't know you were coming."
"yeah, your brother told me to." i told her.
"kie, this is ainsley, her parents are the lewis'."
"the ones who moved into cami's old house?"
"yeah," sarah nodded.
"i'm going to go find rafe," i smiled and touched sarah's arm before moving past her. i went into the living room, seeing rafe sat on the couch, counting twenties between his fingers as a girl was sat across the coffee table, sucking up a line of white powder through her nose.
