I didn't expect it would go like this.
There were not many students in the hallways now and I'm pretty sure if there were, they'd hear our footsteps loudly echoing around. Heejun and I rushed down the stairs, panicking as his phone kept on ringing while we ran. The match was still going and we don't intend to miss any second of it.
Pushing ourselves a bit, we finally took a detour to have an easy way of getting down. Instead of taking the other stairs, we decided to go to the one near the school's field.
"Ah! Now, I'm regretting waiting for you!" I couldn't help but yell out as I almost tripped on the steps since my shoes were really big and the only thing supporting it was how tight my shoelaces were. Heejun only playfully glared at me before going ahead of me, his hair still wet from the competition.
"I didn't even ask for you to wait for me!" he retorted back as I groaned, pushing him a bit as we almost got stuck on going out the doors of the school and running right to the field where we see Gunyeo already running to take the ball from the opposing team.
The field was huge and it took us at least five minutes to run towards where Jihun, Naehyun, and Yoonwoo were. As we got there, we got confused looks from the two before Jihun moved to give us a seat.
"You two are late," Naehyun commented as I only sighed — pointing at Heejun at the same time.
"It's his fault." Heejun immediately argued, pointing right back at me as soon as I accused him.
"It wasn't my fault that she waited," he countered back before sitting down right next to Jihun and I sat between Naehyun and Yoonwoo.
The other team had already got a 2-point advantage and the only thing that could help right now is someone scoring from Gunyeo's team. Jihun and Naehyun had already stood up from their seats — cheering for him as Gunyeo suddenly stole the ball from the other player and rolled the ball with the inside of his foot, faking to kick it with the other foot before actually striking the ball with force.
"Go, Gunyeo!" Yoonwoo only cheered from his seat as he saw the ball going inside the net. A lot of students had also cheered on Gunyeo's team, knowing that he'd either win this or lose his title as the game ends. Though, I knew he can do it.
"The Okocha," Yoonwoo mumbled after as I only furrowed my eyebrows at this and shook my head.
I guess it was a technique that Gunyeo had learned in his training. There was only one point advantage from the other team. If Gunyeo scores this, it would be a tie and he could win this if he scores another after that.
But, it was scary considering the points were almost head-to-head.
The other team now had the ball, passing the others and even Gunyeo getting a bit distracted. A little mad, I decided to cheer along with Jihun and Naehyun, this time standing up on the chair and yelling out Gunyeo's name.
He immediately looked over to us before giving a slight thumbs up before running back again to steal the ball. Though, the other team decided to kick the ball so powerful it flew to Gunyeo's net. Luckily, the goal defender was there to protect the ball from going in the net.
It was a close one so I really thought it was all over.
When Gunyeo finally got the ball back, I didn't expect him to immediately kick it back in force with the ball spinning in the air. I was surprised though since once the goalkeeper tried to catch it, he missed by an inch.
It was a tie already.
The last shot would determine how the match would go. Knowing Gunyeo, he wouldn't let anyone get his title and I'm sure he won't let his team down. Heejun then suddenly cheered as well, following my antics and standing right up on his seat.
"Gunyeo, you can do this! Fighting!" I immediately widened my eyes as soon as I heard Heejun's voice became deeper and even Jihun gave him a weird gaze as soon as he heard it.
I was shocked that Gunyeo in a mere second got the match to the point where they have an actual chance of winning. Passing to each and other members, Gunyeo was the last one to shoot the ball to the net — immediately ending the game as soon as the referee stopped the match.
The team then hugged Gunyeo, ruffling his hair as they won. We even got down the seats to rush to Gunyeo, congratulating him.
"I didn't know you can kick that far," Heejun commented as Gunyeo only laughed at Heejun's shocked reaction. "The ball was spinning earlier and even went to a curve in the air!"
"I'm just glad you didn't kick it to Heejun's direction again," Jihun said as Gunyeo's laugh went even louder — we even joined in as Heejun just playfully frowned at this. I guess he didn't want to repeat the memory of getting hit by the ball again.
As soon as the bell rang, we knew that we had to eat lunch afterward to get ready for the other match later. After we congratulated Gunyeo, I knew far well that I was the one competing against him now.
"The Battle of the Brains is already after lunch," Heejun reminded us as we both nodded — knowing well that we still have to study a bit to answer some of the questions prepared.
"I know," we both answered before following the others as we make our way for the cafeteria. I only felt my heart racing as the time kept on passing by. I know how competitive Gunyeo is and the only way I could win is to do my best.
"I do hope that I can do this," I whispered to myself before taking a deep breath.
