Chapter 17
“All of it man! He said all of it!”
“It’s not that fucking easy!” The second man had no gloves on his hands so I took the chance and bit straight down on his hand.
“BITCH!” I felt a strong elbow wedge itself into my ribs, I released my mouth off his hand but that didn’t stop me thrashing in the grip of my attacker, instead he just held onto me tighter, within a matter of seconds I felt something shift in my body, my energy had been zapped, my eyes were beginning to get heavier and my breathes were laboured.
“Look, I think it’s working” I managed to muster up the dirtiest look I could manage and directed it to the man shrouded in darkness in front of me. He laughed, obviously proud of what he was doing.
I could feel my body started to sway side to side and my attackers took this as their opportunity to get the last of that strange substance into my mouth, just as the glass hit my lip I heard my name being called out, not from the next room or even from outside but within my own mind. As I bit down on my lip trying not to allow the foul liquid to enter my mouth again the voice appeared stronger and louder. I couldn’t hold my lips together for much longer. I could feel them slowly start to part when I felt something stir inside me.
Somewhere deep inside me I could feel something growing, a sudden bright light shone from behind my eyes making my vision impaired, my energy seemed to regain and burst out of me in one big hit. I heard a glass shatter and felt my body drop to the ground.
Was this the effect of the substance I forced to drink? No, this was something else, something familiar.
“Sarah” The voice echoed around me, the voice now recognizable. A mixture of fear and hope surged through me.
“Mum?” I called out. Was I dead? Was I back in limbo? Is that was what that liquid was, a poison?
“Yes Sar--, it’s me. We don’t have—time” It sounded like her voice was breaking up, I looked around trying to find her, but she was nowhere to be seen.
“What’s going on? Mum are you still there?”
“You’ve con—with me, your powers are—wing” Slowly the light was starting to weaken and I took that as a sign to how much time I had left.
“Mum, what’s going on? Where are you?”
“You’re in—ger. You need to conn—the –ments. He is testing—them” The light was but a mere glow but I managed to make out one more word before I was pulled back into reality, ‘hybrid’.
I woke, cradled in a warm embrace. “SARAH! She’s awake!” The darkness that enveloped me was beginning to fade and could finally make out some faces.
Jason was holding me tightly as John, Andrea and Tony looked on from around the room.
“Sarah, are you ok? Do you remember what happened?” Jason asked with a strong and worried voice.
“I was pulled in here, I don’t know by who though, I never saw their faces but they were something supernatural, they knew to use wolfsbane. They forced me to drink—“ I looked around for the glass the substance was in. I finally spotted it behind Andrea’s leg, I pushed myself out of Jason’s arms and crawled over to the shattered glass. There was only about less than half of the strange liquid left at the bottom of the glass. I let out a shaky sigh, half relieved half worried.
“They wanted me to drink all of whatever was in this glass, I’m not sure what it is but it was the most disgusting this I’ve ever tasted in my entire life” Tony carefully picked up the glass making sure not spill a single drop.
“I’ll get the doctors onto this right away” Tony said, he gave Andrea a quick kiss on the forehead and ran out of the room.
“Did they say why? What it’s meant to do?” John asked a little nervous.
“No idea, but they said “He wanted me to drink it all””
“He? Who’s he?” John questioned.
“Whoever ordered the attack I guess?”
After making sure I was ok everyone stared to leave the room, I held Jason back so I could talk to him a little more privately.
“What’s the matter?”
I laughed a little to myself before I answered him. “Do you think it will always be this way?” I watched as his jaw flexed as he wasn’t sure what to say.
“I mean the moment I think we are going to be a normal couple something like this happens” Jason held me in his arms, his warm body absorbing all my bad memories of the night. “Why does this keep happening?” I let out in a sob. He kissed my forehead and whispered into my ear.
“There are some truly horrible people out there that want to destroy anything pure and beautiful. I wish I had all the answers for you and I wish I could keep everything bad and ugly away from you, you don’t deserve any of it” I held onto him tighter.
“There is one other thing I didn’t mention, in front of the others” Jason looked at me curiously.
“I heard my mum, well I was knocked out. She was warning me I think.”
“Your mum? You were in limbo again?”
“No I don’t think so, her voice was all broken up I could barely hear her”
“What was she warning you about?”
“About the guy who ordered this attack I think, she said “He is testing them” and that I need to connect with the elements”
“Testing them? Testing them for what?”
“I’m not really sure but the last thing I could make out before she was gone was one word that I didn’t fully understand”
“What?”“Hybrid”
I watched slowly as fear grew in Jason’s eyes, this wasn’t a good word, I wasn’t sure why but I was going to find out.
