Chapter Five

“SHIT! John! Lucas! Help!!!” Somewhere in the process of cooking dinner I had managed to set the frying pan completely on fire. I had Izadora yelling in my head to use my powers to fix this, but I still had no control over them, obviously I rushed over to the sink and started filling up an old container with water hoping I could extinguish the flames before they spread throughout the kitchen. John was first into the kitchen, and when he first caught sight of the flame I thought I saw fear pass through his blue eyes. He rushed over to the intense flames and put his hands to them, they subtly started to die down but I could see the physical strength it was taking him to control the fire, this must be what it’s like for him now, not even being able to control flame of this size. My bucket had started to over flow and I turned off the tap and threw the water right over the burning pan, Lucas had just made it to kitchen when the flames were finally out seeing the now crispy pan and my slightly singed top he ran straight over to me and grab me fiercely.

“Sarah! Are okay? What happened?” He asked, while examining me.

“I’m fine, I don’t exactly know what happened” Trying to remember my exact actions before I turned our dinner into charcoal I looked over to John who had a look of clear failure written all over his face.

“I, I was about to drain the spaghetti when the water boiled over and spurted out at me” I looked down at my hand to see a red burn mark spread across my hand. “It really hurt and that must have triggered me to set off the flames for the frying pan”

“You should probably put your hand under the water” I nodded and walked back over to the sink and held my hand under the cold water. John was still standing by the stove, staring at frying pan sadly.

“You okay?” Lucas asked.

“Yeah man. I just—I just can’t believe I couldn’t handle that. I use to be able put something like out with a click of my fingers and now--” He paused looking at his hands.

“It’s okay man. Do you want to talk about it?” Lucas asked, I thought maybe this was it John was going to let Lucas in. John looked up at his twin for a moment and shook his head.

“Nah, It’s okay” Lucas sighed and left the kitchen, leaving John still staring at the pan. I was about to ask him if he wanted to talk because this sort of thing would fall under our agreement, but was pulled away by a slight glow coming from the sink.

I looked back at hand and the red mark had vanished, I thought for sure I would have had that burn for a few days, lucky me I guess.

“Okay so I’m going to shout us all pizza considering I nearly burned down the house” I walked over to John, hopefully taking his mind off this whole incident.

“What pizza would you like?” I smiled looking up at John. He must have been back in his own little world because he was shocked to find me standing next to him.

“Ah I’m really not that hungry. Don’t worry about me” He started walking out kitchen when I caught hold of his t-shirt.

“Thank you John, you really helped”

“No I didn’t, I didn’t do anything”

“Yes you did, don’t sell yourself short. If you hadn’t come in when you did, those flames could spread much further than what they did. So accept my gratitude and tell me what pizza you would like, or I’m ordering three Hawaiians” I watched his face consider the option of only have Hawaiian pizza in the house, his least favourite pizza. I continued smiling, almost teasingly. He gave me a half smile and said “Pepperoni” I nodded and let him go.
