Chapter 19
His car pulled up and I watched as the window rolled down "Your knight in shining armour is here malady" John said with a big toothy grin.
I quickly jumped in and told him to drive, without hesitation his foot hit the acceleration and watched as Jason's house shrink in the side mirror. I felt horrible, horrible for being jealous, horrible that all that was left in Jason's room was a note that said I had gone home and that I was expecting his call when he was finished at the big kids table. I knew what I was doing would cause a fight, a fight that I was most likely going to lose but common sense had been knocked out of me as soon as Jennifer knocked on Jason's bedroom door. There were so many questions swirling around in my mind that I hadn't even noticed John had spoken.
"Sorry?" I mumbled out in a daze.
"Food, you need food" He smiled, I looked at him confused. Was he actually talking about food?
"Well I at least need food and I know what you're going to say "You always need food John" and I can't deny that is a true fact but I do have a sudden craving for Chinese and I know this great little 24hr Chinese place just off Bourke" I was right, he was talking about food.
"I call you at nearly 3 in the morning saying I need you to pick me up at my boyfriend's house, suspiciously none the less and the first thing you say is, "food"?"
"So is that a no to Chinese?" He asked just as confused as I felt.
"Ah no, I'm just a little, shocked and it might not be such a good idea, there's just been another attack, that thing is out there tonight"
"It's a public place Sarah, besides I hardly have a wolf scent, you don't have one because you haven't shifted yet and it's only attacking members of the pack. We should be ok" I felt uneasy, but he made a fair point, plus there would have to be extra wolves out on patrols now after the attack.
He smiled and kept his focus out on the road, he turned at the next right and I saw a neon red sign flashing 24/7 Chinese, John pulled up the hand brake and turned off his car and I felt the heater die down.
"I'm not one to pry Sarah, I figure there is good reason you called and if you want to tell me or not, well that's up to you"
I searched his eyes and was surprised to see that he was telling me the truth, it wasn't that he didn't care but that he knew that I was tangled in my own thoughts and that I would tell him as soon as I had straighten them out for myself first.
I watched as John ordered an absurd amount of Chinese for two people, but then was vividly reminded of the time I watched him consume nearly entire all you can eat buffet. We sat in the cold metal chairs as we waited for our food to be cooked, John's finger tapping to the music that played over the speaker, each tap breaking a part of the wall I had so strategically built up around me.
"I'm scared" I said with my eyes glued to the table in front of me and as quietly as possible, hoping that John may not hear it and we could bypass this D&M about to happen. His finger had stopped tapping and I knew with even his bad hearing he heard my softly spoken words.
"Scared of what?" He said, his full attention on me.
"A lot of things, things that shouldn't scare but do, things that should make me paranoid to go outside but I still go, things that I thought I couldn't possibly be scared of because they weren't supposed to be real but are, I'm scared all the time" I finally met his gaze, his jaw tensed he knew know that this wasn't just boyfriend issues.
"Why don't you say anything?"
"Because I won't let people see me like that"
"Won't" He noticed.
"I won't let people see me like that; terrified at everything that makes a noise, paranoid that someone is watching me, that isn't me, I never use to be so fragile. "
"It's ok to be scared, hell I would love to be told that other people are scared and that I'm not the only one, cause it kind of sucks when it feels like you're the only one" His gaze shifted from mine, preventing any other emotions to accidentally slip out.
"Jason still thinks I'm a child, or better yet a damsel in distress that constantly needs his saving. He seems to forget that I harness all four elements and if just bothered to put in the time with me, I would be stronger than him" I could feel Izadora becoming irritated, we didn't usually agree on a lot of things but when it came to the possibility of shifting, well we couldn't be more in sync. She had all this power inside of her bursting at the seams but with never the ability to break loose, never stretching her legs, she was growing restless and it burned within us both.
"Maybe that's the issue" He said as he watched the cook bag up our orders.
"What?"
"Ever think of why he is reluctant to train you? Constantly holding you back? I mean there's a pack meeting going on right now isn't there, after the attack? Why aren't you there? Maybe he doesn't want to be outshone by his own mate" I was taken back, his words came out so naturally, had he been thinking about this before tonight?
"Why would you say that?"
"Don't get me wrong Sarah, Jason is one of my best mates and oldest friends but he's an alpha and alphas are always striving to be the best, just think if everyone saw your potential who would the pack think is the strongest? If he keeps you weak and out of the public eye, he doesn't have to worry"
"Order number 67" The employee called, John's chair screeched as he stood up to grab the bags of food.
"Come on Sarah" He called out from across the room. I sat frozen in my chair, unable to comprehend what John had just said when I was brought back to reality with a dull scream.
"What was that?" I questioned as I stood up to investigate.
"What was what?" John asked confused. Just as I was about to explain what I had heard there was a scream again, much louder this time that John could hear. We both looked around for the source when I saw a tall skinny figure appear at the front door of the 24/7 Chinese restaurant.
"HELP!" Screamed Andy, he was bloody and bruised and looked scared for his life.
I rushed to the door and pulled him inside.
"Andy! What the hell happened to you? Are you ok?" Before he could catch his breath and tell what was going on the power to the restaurant was cut and next thing I knew glass was shattering.
