Chapter 10

Maria

It's been 3 days since I got discharged from the hospital. Theo and I were always by mums side. She came home yesterday but didn't talk much. Uncle Angelo was here too to help as well. I have not seen or even heard about father in these 3 days.

Right now we are seated at the table having dinner. Father is not here which is a good thing. Mum said he just ran and is missing.

Me and Theo were sitting next to each other and in front of us was mum and Angelo.

There was tension in the air, I could feel it. Theo was behaving different and distant from yesterday, he is not even looking at me and now, I feel like I did something wrong. I tried to approach him earlier, but he say he was busy.

Mum cleared her throat and said to me.

"So Maria, you know we all love you right?"

Why is she asking me this?

"Yes, why are you asking me this?"

"Well I and your brother were thinking many you should, you know, settle down."

Oh, I know where this is going.

"Well, I have settled down properly thanks though." I tried to divert the main point.

"Don't act smart Maria, you know what she is talking about." Theo said in a cold tone which took me by surprise. He never talks like that.

"But why? Are you bored of me?" I looked at mum.

"That's not the reason. They both care about you and would like to see you settled down with a family and be happy." Angelo says.

What! He came into my life 3 days ago and now thinks he can control it.

"Well I have a family and I am happy. I don't need a husband to do that."

"But why won't you?" My mother asked as if I was the stupid one here.

"For starters, I am only 21. I see myself thinking of getting married at the age of 26 or 27. I am too young for this kind of commitment."

"You are old enough to marry Maria!" My mother argued.

"Well then why doesn't Theo get married, he is 26 very old for his age to be single."

"We are not talking about me, we are talking about you! You will get married by the end of the month and that is final, whether you like it or not!" Theo raised his voice.

He looks a lot like father now. I can see the guilt in his eyes when he sees that I am scared of him right now. His eyes soften immediately regretting his tone. He tried holding my hand but I snatch it away before he holds it.

"Maria I didn't-" regret was prominent in his voice. But I cut him off.

"You know what Theodore-" his eyes start to water. I only call him that when I am disappointed with him.

"- in my life I never asked for anything, I was not able to dream for what I want in life. Everything was given and decided for me. You can't do this as well." I started tearing up.

"Maria you will get married by the end of the month and that is final!" My mum said.

"N-no!"

"Yes, Maria!" She said more sternly.

"Do I at least get to choose to whom I get married?" I said with hope.

They all looked at me and I got the hint.

"NO! YOU KNOW WHAT, FUCK YOU!"
I exclaimed.

Mother was taken aback, she never heard me curse.

"FUCK ALL OF YOU, DAD'S NOT HERE SO YOU ALL DECIDED TO TAKE HIS PLACE BY PULLING ME BY MY STRINGS!" I stood up making everyone stand as well.

"I AM TOO YOUNG FOR THIS!" I started walking to the stairs when mum held my hand.

"YOU ARE NOT THAT YOUNG TO MARRY MARIA. I MARRIED WHEN I WAS 18."

"AND LOOK HOW THAT TURNED OUT!" And then I got a slap on my face. But then I did the most, unlike thing I would ever imagine.

I slapped her back.

"MARIA!" both Angelo and Theo were shook in horror. Mother on the other hand looked at me in disbelief.

"Everything has a karma mother. That was just yours. This will be the last time you all get to decide for me. If something like that happens again, believe me, I'll be your worst nightmare." I spit the venomous words at them.

"Hope you all fall off your bed in sleep." And I go to my room, crawl under the duvet and repeat.

They are not worth your tears. They are not worth your tears.
