What the fuck was a plant doing on his table?

Using every shred of composure he possessed, Jungkook closed his bedroom door with the care of an ordnance disposal unit disarming a live bomb. Despite being miles away, he could hear his mother priming herself to lecture him about having self-control and showing respect for the comfortable home she and his father provided him at the mere thought of him slamming a door. Who said he didn't have home training?

"What is that?" He asked.

The clueless and presumed owner of the newest unwanted addition to their household looked up from her laptop. "Good morning to you too, Jeon. I'm wonderful, thanks for asking."

He rolled his eyes and the false pleasantry. Dahlia's voice was dripping with so much sarcasm that it could have formed a puddle of disdain on the floor.

"Morning. Hope you slept well. Why is there a ficus on the table?" He asked, all in one breath.

She followed his gaze to the potted intrusion living happily in a little white ceramic vase. "A ficus is a tree. This is a succulent."

He lifted an eyebrow to match hers. "Why is it there?"

"Um," she shrugged. "The usual reasons people bring home plants? Decoration? Ambiance?"

"That can't go in your room?"

She could decorate and ambiance her space with poison ivy for all he cared, as long as it was in her room. Not in the common area.

"I mean, it could have but what's wrong with it being out here?" She asked.

Did she really not understand this?

"I would rather not decorate my table with dried up leaves and water damage," he said.

She looked down at the plant and scoffed. "It's literally a cactus."

"And?" He said. He didn't care what it was and honestly, he could do without the botany lesson.

"And I put an ice cube in once a week or so," She explained. "Too much water will kill it."

"I don't want it to mess up the table."

"Well, it's a little too late for that," she said, raising her brow again and looking down at the table unimpressed. "It's already scratched up."

The staring contest that ensued was only broken by a quick and loud sniffle. This was his grandmother's table.

"Did you not notice the huge gash going down the middle of it?" She asked. "A table cloth would be an upgrade."

Jungkook sniffed again and looked away, scratching his irritated nose before delivering his rebuttal. "Isn't it a rule that we consult each other before making changes to the common area?"

She raised a finger but didn't look up from her laptop. "We are to consult each other before making MAJOR changes to the common area."

"This IS major to me."

"A cactus is not major. Painting the room orange is major. Putting up plaid curtains is major. Sitting a succulent on a table is not only inconsequential, it's also charming, in my opinion."

Just as he opened his mouth to tell her all of the ways she was wrong, his phone began to ring in a very specific way that told him a certain female parental figure was calling. After quickly weighing his options, he decided to drop the issue in favor of answering his mother's call. Fuck the ficus.
