Inside the bathroom, she let the water cascade over her body, trying to wash away the tension that refused to stay away for long. As the steam enveloped her, she closed her eyes and tried to ignore the longing she felt for a man that wasn't her man. The absence of the heat of his body against hers had left a void, and despite the water being hot enough to fill the room with the steam surrounding her, it didn't come close to being a substitute.
Tonight was further proof that they shared something special. She wanted him. He wanted her too, and the only thing keeping them from crossing the bridge of their friendship and stepping into uncharted territory was the fact that she had a boyfriend.
Her title as his girlfriend held significantly less weight than it had a week ago, or even the week before that. His impatience was adorned and embellished until it appeared to be the beautiful, sincere reassurance one would give his timid lover. He tried to force the connection that she expected to develop, but it never formed, no matter how much she wanted it to.
With Bunny, she didn't have to try. The bond they shared was formed effortlessly. At times, it was against their will. No matter how hard she tried to keep hating him, her attraction grew stronger, growing into an inferno that burned down the very walls she'd put up against him. The weeks of resistance did nothing but stoke the flames. It was as if the universe had conspired to bring them together, and resisting felt like fighting fate itself. She was tired of fighting.
What she needed to do was clear. She needed to end things with Dom, no matter how poor the timing was. She felt guilty for coming to this conclusion after saying she loved him, but it would be even worse to continue watching him fall deeper in love when she still had yet to fall.
As she moisturized her skin, she tried coming up with the right words to say but they seemed to not exist. All she could do was tell him the truth: that she was sorry but she couldn't be with him anymore.
Putting the body butter back into her suitcase, she slid into a t-shirt and shorts, then picked her phone up from where it lay on the bed. Her fingers hesitated over the screen as her mind cycled through his possible responses. She imagined the most likely to be anger. It was possible that he was still upset with her from earlier. Breaking up with him right after having an argument about her and Bunny's closeness would probably make him think that Bunny was the reason why, and it made her feel a pang of guilt that he wouldn't entirely be wrong.
For a moment, she wondered if the conclusion she suddenly came to was the result of being around Bunny's pheromones. It was a real possibility that she was subconsciously being influenced by him. Even her mother became an agreeable ball of putty around her father during times like these, and in turn, his normally serious, no-nonsense demeanor softened, especially towards her.
Being realistic, she acknowledged that while Bunny may be unintentionally influencing her, he wasn't causing her to think anything that hadn't already been simmering beneath the surface of her thoughts. He merely brought them to light. She and Dom weren't meant to be. A part of her thought it might be better to give Dom time to cool off before dropping her ill-timed breakup, but that would just be prolonging the inevitable. Hadn't she done that enough? It was more fair to come clean no matter the timing than it was to continue turning a blind eye to the truth to save either of their feelings.
With a deep breath, she tapped his contact and put her earbud into her ear. Her heart pounded harder with each ring, but she reminded herself that honesty was what they both deserved, even if it meant the coming conversation would be messy and someone's heart was going to be broken.
