It was their first date as an official couple and although Dahlia had gone out with Dominic several times before, just having the title of being his girlfriend made this occasion feel different.
That new and exciting feeling wasn't limited to just tonight, however. Everything felt special and more meaningful. From the clothes she wore, to the feeling of sunshine on her face, to the music she streamed, everything held a new significance now that she belonged to someone just as much as they belonged to her. It had only been a couple of days but those days were spent floating through nirvana.
That nirvana was put on pause when her absentee roommate chose the moment she walked out of her room fully beautified for her date to return home.
She hadn't seen him since the day of their fight. Unlike her previous mood, Bun looked fed up with life. His scowl was deep and a vertical line of tension was etched into the center of his forehead. Closing the door behind him, he dropped his heavy gym bag with a thud and leaned against the door, exhaling his ritual hard sigh at finally being home.
She hadn't heard that sigh in days. Hearing it again returned a sense of normalcy to the previously empty dorm.
His eyes were still closed, so she decided to make the first move. "Hi, Bunny," she said softly.
He took his time opening his tired eyes before returning her greeting. "Whassup."
"Are you ok? You look exhausted."
"I am exhausted but I'm straight," he said, pushing himself from the door with a soft groan.
After kicking off his trainers, he began trudging toward the kitchen, giving her sexy, all-black outfit a once over as he passed. "You going out with your girls or something?"
Sudden apprehension made her hesitate before answering. The only people she'd told about her and Dominic so far were Savannah and Morgan, and she was sure that neither of them would've taken the initiative to tell Bun. Any information she told them stayed between them.
But after all she and Bun had been through, after how close they'd gotten, she was secretly dreading this moment. No matter his reaction, she had to tell him. It was better than him finding out through someone else.
"No, um," she began slowly, "I'm going out with my... my boyfriend."
The news made him stop in his tracks, and Dahlia unintentionally held her breath as he turned around to face her.
"Your boyfriend?"
Conjuring false confidence, she stood a little taller, nodding. "My boyfriend."
He said nothing for a long time. While she forced herself to breathe normally, he stared at her with an unreadable expression. Nothing, not even a lift of his brow, gave away what he could have been feeling until a hint of an emotion she couldn't decipher flashed across his stoic face, disappearing almost as soon as it appeared.
He then sniffled loudly and scratched his nose with the back of his hand. "Aight," he said. "Have fun."
Without another word, he resumed his trip to the kitchen, leaving her staring at his back in shock. Opening the cupboard, he took out one of his countless blender bottles, filled it with milk, then unscrewed the top of the huge container of vanilla flavored protein powder that was a permanent fixture on the counter.
She blinked rapidly in disbelief. "That's it?"
"What do you mean, that's it?" He asked, chuckling sardonically. "What did you expect me to say?"
