Chapter 10
I felt the phone slip from my hand and suddenly everything was in slow motion. I watched as it slowly tumbled to the ground, making a resounding crash as it collided with the concrete. I looked up quickly and scanned the crowd in front of me, my eyes locking on a figure wearing a black hoodie, head down, walking briskly in my direction. I jumped as I felt a hand squeeze my shoulder, only to find Keegan looking at me with worry etched across his face.
“Syd?” he asked, waving a hand in front of my face, “You alright there?”
“Huh? Oh. Uh, yeah. I just zoned out for a moment.” I laughed, plastering a fake smile on my face as I bent down to pick up the phone. I quickly closed the message and buried it in my bag. It was probably a wrong number, I mean, who could have known what my number was? But they'd signed it with "T"...I sighed, deciding to forget about it, and looked back at Keegan.
“You sure you’re okay?” he said, eying me carefully.
“Yeah, for sure” I smiled, grabbing his hand and leading him towards Starbucks. “Now c’mon, I think we need to get to know each other a little better before I decide whether I want to move in with you guys.” I laughed.
“Yeah, I guess.” He smirked, falling into step beside me.
“Why the smirk mister.” I laughed, raising an eyebrow.
“Oh, no reason.” He said, continuing to smirk.
“Mhmm..” I said, disbelievingly. “Come on then, I need a coffee!”
“Yeah, yeah.” He laughed, opening the door to Starbucks. “My lady.”
“Oh thank you kind sir.” I replied with a giggle, walking up to the counter to be greeted by a middle aged lady with a kind face.
“What can I get for you miss?” she smiled.
“Uh, I’ll get a Vanilla Spice Latte please.” I said, gesturing towards the picture on the counter.
“And for you sir?” she asked, turning her head towards Keegan.
“I’ll just have a regular coffee.” He replied, flashing his brilliant white teeth.
“Coming right up.”
“I’ll go find us a table, yeah?” I said, handing Keegan the money for my latte.
“Sounds good babe.” He smiled “But no, I can pay for that.” He laughed, pushing my hand away.
“Oh no there’s really no nee—“
“Syd, I want to.” He said, staring at me seriously.
“Only if you’re sure…” I replied, not wanting him to waste money on me, I mean he barely knows me.
“Of course I’m sure Sydney.” He chuckled, waving me off to find a table. I laughed and walked over to a booth, sitting myself down on one side. I started to think about Keegan, he was pretty cute, and who knows, maybe flatting with him would be a great idea. But then again I don’t even know him, what if he’s a psychopath with a collection of human body parts. What if I was to be the next addition to this collection?! I was suddenly interrupted from my thoughts by a quiet tinkling noise coming from my bag.
