Chapter 5
ARI’S P.O.V
I awoke with a start, and looked down at my watch; 11am. It had only been an hour since Toby and Christian left, I had time.
I looked around the room and my gaze fell on the dimly lit light bulb. An idea flashed across my mind. Why had I not thought of this before? I stood up and swiftly unscrewed the bulb, letting it fall to the concrete and shatter. I picked up the filaments and straightened them out. I looked to the door and groaned when I realised it was a 9-pin lock. This one would be hard, but I had to try.
I slid the filaments into the lock and moved it around. After a while I heard the click I was waiting for. “Yes.” I breathed, slowly turning the handle. I let out a sigh of relief as the door clicked, and swung open to reveal a maze of corridors. I stepped out tentatively, testing the floor for any traps, which knowing Toby, he would have placed. Even as a child Toby loved to play pranks, and was often setting up traps. Once he’d put bucket of water on my bedroom door, but instead of attaching it, he just sat it there, so when I walked through the water fell on me.
And so did the bucket.
Toby had crashed through the door, pointing and laughing at me; lying on the floor drenched, a nice bruise already forming on my forehead. I quickly pushed the memory aside.
I continued walking and came up to a fork in the corridors. I quickly chose left, and continued until I came across a bright red wooden door, I shivered and quickly walked past it. I kept walking until I came to an iron door, I pushed it open and almost cheered when it revealed cool breeze of the outside world. I stepped out into the warm sunlight and smiled.
I was free.
Suddenly a rough hand grabbed my arm, spinning me around, forcing me face to face with Christian. Toby was by his side pouring some kind of liquid on to a rag. Toby walked up to me and pressed the rag to my face, I felt my mind go fuzzy as I tried to breathe, but it was no use. Toby looked me right in the eyes, his own held a sharp spark within the usual darkness, and I knew I was in for it.
“Well, well, well...” He said, glancing back at Christian, “sorry sweetheart, better luck next time.” He chuckled darkly, before everything faded to black.
TOBY’S P.O.V
I flung the passed out Ari over my shoulder and started walking to the car. “Dude? How the hell did she escape?” Christian asked as we reached the car. I ripped open the door and dropped her on to the back seat, securing her limp body in place with a seatbelt. “Well judging by the fact that the bloody light bulb was smashed on the floor, maybe, oh I don’t know, just maybe, she used the filaments to pick the lock?” I spat sarcastically, climbing into the front seat and turning the key in the ignition. “But it was a 9-pin lock! You can’t pick those with light bulb filaments!” he muttered, sliding into the seat beside me. “Well clearly you can.” I said through gritted teeth. If he wasn’t going to shut up I was going to lose it. She had almost got out, she would have gone to the police, and everything would have been ruined.
I sighed and leaned back in my seat, I glanced at Ari in the rear view mirror; she looked so peaceful; her chest slowly rising and falling with every breath she took. I felt my fist clench as an array of images flashed through my mind and I found myself watching through everything I had tried so hard to forget.
ONE YEAR AGO. TOBY’S P.O.V
I stared out the window as Ari continued to ramble on about her new boyfriend and how “amazing and romantic” he is, I could feel my insides churning, my hatred for this new boy growing stronger by the minute. I know it was hardly fair, I didn’t even know him. But he had Ari, and I never was a good one for jealousy.
“Toby? Earth to Toby,” she chuckled, her eyes shining as she glanced over at me. She’s so beautiful when she laughs; her whole face lights up and her eyes sparkle like diamonds. “Uh...sorry, I guess I zoned out.” I half-smiled, turning my head towards the window as she started on about “Zach” again. I sighed deeply and she looked over at me. “What’s wrong Toblerone?” she asked, using the nickname she had created when we were younger. I sighed again, “Well honestly Ari, I don’t like your boyfriend.” I said, looking away from her piercing gaze. “What! Toby you don’t even know him!” she gasped, staring at me, her eyes wide. “Yeah but...I...Forget it...” I mumbled, turning back to stare out of the window again.
How could anyone be so clueless, I never tried to hide my love for her, and frankly, it frustrated me seeing her with all these guys, when I knew that I would be far better for her than they could ever be.
“So Tobs,” she continues, apparently forgetting that I just expressed my dislike for her boyfriend. “I’m thinking horror tonight, yeah?” It was our fortnightly movie night, and it also happened to be Friday the 13th. So naturally it had to be a horror night.
“Babe, it’s Friday the 13th, would you expect any different?” I chuckled. She laughed as she pulled the car into a parking space and we hopped out of the car, making our way into the video store.
I started mindlessly browsing the selection of movies, occasionally picking up on that looked interesting and reading the back. Eventually I made my way over to Ari, my arms loaded with DVD cases.
“So I found a few good ones...” I began, stopping short when I saw her deep in conversation with some guy. A closer look at his nametag revealed his name was Zach. Zach, I presumed, was the very same Zach that Ari had been talking about almost the entire way here. “Of course he works here.” I thought to myself. Why must life always seem to work against me?
“Oh hey Toby,” Ari said, looking up to see me standing there awkwardly. “I was just wondering, Zach just offered to take me out to dinner, would you mind if we rescheduled our horror night?” she asked hopefully, looking at me with those puppy dog eyes that were always so hard to resist.
“Yeah, sure, whatever.” I mumbled, looking at the floor. I could feel my fists balling up, and it took all I had to stop myself from doing something I’d soon regret. I quickly spun on my heel, dropping my armful of movies to the ground. “Let Zach pick those up, he works here after all.” I thought, as I angrily walked out of the store. “Toby?!” I heard Ari call, but she could go to hell. There’d be no need to reschedule our horror night, one call from 'Zach' and Ari'd just bail again. I need to make some more friends. I thought bitterly.
