Chapter 6

ARI'S P.O.V

I woke up feeling groggy, and my head held a dull ache. I slowly opened my eyes, wincing as the sunlight stung them. I looked around me and sighed. I was in a car again.

I groaned as I shifted in the seat, the pain in my head becoming uncomfortably painful.I sat up and looked out the window, we were driving past fields and everywhere looked deserted.

"Nobody would find me out here..." I muttered, pressing my forehead up against the cool glass, closing my eyes as it instantly numbed the pain.

"Well would you look who's finally awake." Toby said pointedly from the front seat, glancing back at me, his eyes burning with hate. "Morning, sweetheart." He chuckled darkly.

"Where are we going?" I asked, shivering under his gaze. “Wouldn’t you like to know.” He teased cruelly, his eyes returning to the road ahead.

“Yes I would.” I answered back, surprising myself as a sudden feeling of power over-came me. I watched as Toby’s eyes narrowed and he glared at me in the rear view mirror. “What?” he spat, his voice dripping with anger.

“I said, yes. I. Would.” I glared at Toby. I glanced over to Christian to see him watching me with what looked like...admiration? He quickly turned and focussed back on the road in front of us. “You’d better watch it, girl. Let’s not forget the rules.” He turned so he was facing me and looked me right in the eyes, his were filled with a darkness and loathing. I remembered back to the rules.

“Rule number 5, you will not speak unless spoken to and you will not talk back, under any circumstances, or there will be severe consequences.”

I stared right back at Toby, “where are we going Toby. Huh?” I said, my tone mocking. I knew this was dangerous but what did I have to lose, he had taken everything, I couldn’t even talk to my mother.

“You. Little. Bi—HONK HOOOONK.” Both of our heads snapped to the windscreen and I screamed as I saw the truck speeding towards us, Toby seemed to just be staring at it, unable to move. “TOBY!” I screamed, and he clicked. He attempted to swerve the car but it wasn’t fast enough. I let out a blood-curdling scream as I watched the truck collide with my side of the car. Pain shot through every inch of my body and I gladly gave in to the darkness as I fell into unconsciousness.

“I don’t know Sir, as we cannot locate her records and have nothing to say who she is; we do not know of any previous injuries and therefore cannot truly tell the extent of the damage to her body.”

Well played Toby, well played.

I heard Toby groan and footsteps coming back and forth so I assumed he was pacing. I could not feel anything or move at all as my body had not yet regained consciousness, but I could hear perfectly.

“There is a good chance she will make a full recovery, but there is also the chance that she will have developed a condition, like for example amnesia, due to the head injuries sustained during the accident.”

I listened carefully, my mind already formulating a plan.

“AMNESIA?!” I heard Toby shout, and something came crashing to the floor, shattering as it made contact.

“Sir I am going to have to ask you to calm down.” A stern voice spoke, I assumed a doctor.

Toby sighed again and stopped pacing. I ran over my plan in my mind and decided to put it into action as soon as possible. I could feel my fingers slowly regaining feeling, and I could wiggle them a little. Before long I could move my hand, and I slowly started to open my eyes. Everything was fuzzy, but I could make out two shapes looking at me over the side of what I assumed to be my hospital bed.

“Ari?” the Toby shaped blur asked softly.

“To-ee?” I managed to get out. Great, so my speech was not too good at the moment.

“Yeah it’s me.” He chuckled, his voice light, but it held a glimmer of sadness.

I groaned as I tried to sit up and a jolt of pain shot down my back. The doctor rushed over and gently pushed me down, muttering something about “needing to stay down”, and “lots of pain medication”.

“Why are you here Toby?” I asked. Surprised at how quickly my vocal abilities had returned.

“What?” he said, eyebrows furrowed in confusion.

“You’re supposed to be at James’ 16th aren’t you?” I asked, looking up into his eyes, which were clouded with confusion. Suddenly something flashed through his eyes, and he figured it out.

“Oh Ari...” he looked at me sadly.

“That was two years ago.”
