Chapter 17

ARI/SYDNEY’S P.O.V

“If that's what you want.” He seethed, his knuckles white as he balled his fists in anger. "Maybe I will."

He spun around angrily, walking over to the track and climbing up until he reached the iron door. He flicked open a little box beside it, keying in a few numbers before the door slid open. He walked through without another word, the door slamming closed behind him. I ran up to the door to find the keypad was a 10-digit number pad. I pressed a few buttons, glaring at the small screen as it started flashing red, ‘access denied.’

Suddenly I heard the sound of running water, I whipped around to see water gushing out of the large pipe. My heart almost stopped as I realised what was happening, the room was almost completely concrete, the door was locked with a code and the window was too high up to reach. I was sealed in, he was going to drown me.

The floor was almost submerged in water by now, I started panicking, I knew that in under 10 minutes the room would be full, and I would be dead. I ran down the track to the cart, looking through the compartment for something, anything that could be of use. But there was nothing. I stepped down to the ground, my feet sloshing through almost 30cm of water as I circled the room, feeling at the walls for any hidden buttons. I sighed in defeat as I completed the full circle, my back sliding down the wall until I was sat in the water. I lifted my hands to my face, pushing a few stray hairs behind my ear as I leaned my head back to rest against the concrete wall.

My mind wandered to thoughts of University, life on campus. I was supposed to be sharing a dorm with my best friend, living the college life, partying and making friends, but I guess things never turn out the way that you plan. I thought of all the girls who would be out having fun at parties right now, dancing and laughing with friends. To say I envied them would be an understatement, I would give anything to just have my normal life back.

I felt the water lap around my neck and stood up, making my way over to sit on the tracks.  I pulled my knees up to my chin, resting my head against them and staring at the wall in front of me. I laughed bitterly as I remembered Toby’s set of 10 rules, most of which I had already broken.

Rule number one; you will not attempt to escape.

Whoops.

Rule number four; you will not befriend, nor date anyone.

Strike two.

Rule number six; you will do as I say at all times.

Well rules are made to be broken after all, I suppose. I shivered as my wet clothes clung to my body, he could have at least made it warm water, that way I wouldn’t have to sit here freezing my ass off. I glanced to the wall opposite me, noticing that the water was now more than ¾ of the way up the wall, I remembered the space blanket I’d shoved in my pocket earlier. I pulled it out and unfolded it, wrapping it around me, instantly feeling warmer. My eyes landed on the small window by the ceiling, it looked just big enough for me to fit through, if it weren’t all the way up there.

Then it suddenly occurred to me; the water.

All I had to do was wait until the water got up to the window, and then swim up and hope that I could find a way to get through the window. The water level was rising fast, I only had a few minutes before it would reach the window. I was currently sat at the very top of the track, by the door that I’d entered through, the water just inches below me. Soon my space blanket would do nothing to keep me warm.
