Chapter 3
I sighed and slid my back down the cool metal wall, landing with a thump of the floor. I saw the drop of water stain the concrete before I even knew I was crying, and then I couldn’t hold it in anymore. I felt the warm tears stream down my cheeks as I tried to figure out what was happening. Toby... my best friend Toby, or so I’d thought, had tricked me into thinking he’d been shot and then with the help of Christian, kidnapped me and brought me here; Wherever here was.
I glanced around the room again, hoping that I had missed something, something that would help me get out of here. No such luck, the walls were the same; cold, heavy metal, and the floor a dirty, grey concrete. There was no escaping.
I wiped the back of my hand along my cheeks, catching the last of the stray tears before they could hit the floor. I tilted my head back so it rested against the wall and thought of what I could have possibly done to deserve this. From what I could remember, I had done nothing to Toby to bring this kind of thing on, he was my best friend, I would never hurt him. Clearly he didn’t feel the same.
I found myself smiling weakly as my mind replayed through memories of Toby and I; our water balloon fight in the park when we were 12. We’d came back drenched from head to toe, laughing hysterically as my mum opened the door and raised an eyebrow at us, saying nothing. I laughed at the memory of my 10th birthday party, when Toby had decided that the cake needed one more thing; my face. He’d promptly pushed my face forward just as I’d blown out the last candle, resulting in whipped cream and icing all over it, I’d glared at him and grabbed a chunk of the cake, crushing it into his hair while laughing. I remembered our first day of high school; we’d stuck together like glue, he was one of those people who walked into a room and instantly made friends with everyone. I however, tended to just hang out with Toby, and pretty much just became friends with his close mates. I had a few girl friends, but I mostly stuck to the guys that hung out with Toby. They didn’t seem to mind as I was one of those girls who would join in with their football games and didn’t care about getting my clothes or nails dirty.
“What changed, Toby?” I whispered, staring at the harsh red marks on my wrists from the cuffs. I tentatively rubbed the bruises forming on my shins from being pulled so brutally out of the car and lay on my back on the cool concrete. I was so tired.
I felt my eyes drooping and before long I was drifting off, I let the darkness envelop me and fell asleep.
TOBY’S P.O.V
I locked the iron door behind me - trapping Ariadne inside, and turned on my heel in the direction of the exit. Christian was behind me and we made our way out to the car.
“Hey man, so what’s the plan for tomorrow?” He asked, looking at me curiously.
“Well. I think it’s time we put rule number ten into action, yeah?” I replied, feeling a small smile playing the corners of my mouth, this was going to be good.
“Any ideas on how we’re going to do that?” He questioned. I tapped my nose knowingly and winked at him, I swiftly opened the car door and hopped inside, closing it behind me. Christian got in beside me and I turned the key in the ignition. He started fiddling with the knobs on the radio and eventually found a good station, I started drumming my fingertips on the steering wheel to the beat as I weaved in and out of the busy traffic. I pulled the car into a space outside my apartment block and told Christian to stay in the car while I went to grab something. When I got to my apartment there was a yellow slip of paper attached to the door.
