Chapter 19

KEEGAN’S P.O.V

I was furious, how could anyone betray her like that? She was the sweetest girl I’d ever known and the thought of someone treating her like that made me want so smash something.

I didn’t know where I was going, but I had to get away from everyone, I needed space to think. I decided against calling the police, if Sydney hadn’t done it already then there must be something stopping her, and from what I’d just heard of Toby he seemed like the type of person that would do anything to save his own skin.

I walked along the footpath towards a little park, it was almost empty aside from a couple of children playing on the playground not so far from me. I sat on an empty bench overlooking a small pond and noticed a couple sharing a picnic not far from me. I watched as they laughed and threw bread to the ducks in the pond, I felt a pang in my chest. I wished that could be me and Sydney.

That first day I saw her, I thought she was gorgeous. But then as our friendship grew I became worried that if I made a move it would destroy everything we had. I cursed myself over and over for not going for it before it was too late, but it was. She only thought of me as a friend.

I don’t know how long I sat there, just staring at the ducks, wishing I could have done something sooner. Maybe if we’d been together I could have protected her more. I pushed the thought aside, lifting myself up from the bench slowly making my way through the park in the direction of the hospital. I reached into my pocket for my phone, switching it on. My eyes widened, 10am. I had been there almost 4 hours! I unlocked my phone to see I had 6 missed called from Alex and 4 messages. I opened the messages quickly, seeing they were all from Alex, none from Sydney. I sighed sadly, opening Alex’s thread.

[7:43] where are you man, I woke up to find you and Syd gone and now she’s come back saying you ran off?

[8:30] seriously Kegs, Sydney’s scared you’re going to do something stupid. Answer your damn phone!

[8:46] KEEGAN DON’T GO LOOKING FOR HIM YOU STUPID SHIT. SYDNEY JUST TOLD ME EVERYTHING AND IF YOU TRY AND FIND HIM IT WON’T END WELL FOR ANY OF US.

I had thought about going to find him, but I had decided not to after hearing what he was capable of. I’d figured she was safe at the hospital anyway.

[9.37] Keegan you need to come back, something happened, Sydney’s body reacted badly to one of the medicines she was put on and she’s having to go into surgery. They don’t know if she’ll make it.

My heart stopped as I read the last message in the thread. I read it over and over, making sure I wasn’t seeing things, before breaking out into a sprint back to the hospital. I soon reached the entrance and ran up to the elevator, pushing the button to the floor Sydney’s room was on. I tapped my foot impatiently, my heart beating faster than I thought possible as I waited for the doors to open on her floor. I wasted no time waiting for the doors to fully open as I sprinted to her room, finding a shattered looking Alex slumped against the wall in the waiting room close to Sydney’s room.

“WHERE IS SHE?! ALEX WHAT HAPPENED DID SHE SURVIVE?” I shouted running over to him and shaking his shoulder, my cheeks now wet from tears.

“They’ve finished surgery, she’s back in her room so they can work on her some more. We’re not allowed to see her.” He said softly, his eyes trained to the floor. I watched a tear run down his cheek and on to his shirt, leaving a dark splotch where it fell.

Alex looked miserable, I knew he saw Sydney as the sister he never had. He would give his life for her. We both would.

I got up slowly and went over to the window looking into her room. The curtains had been closed but I could still see the heart rate monitor through a small crack that had been left there. The colourful lines leaped around, moving up and down with her breathing and heartbeat. I watched them for a while, they were sort of calming. Suddenly they all stopped moving and I could just hear the continuous beep coming from the room. I felt the blood drain from my face as I became dizzy and my vision turned black.
