Chapter 1
"Hurry up Ari, we're going to be late!" Toby called, leaning against the door frame as I grabbed the last of my bags and scrambled around for my keys.
"I can't find my keys!" I yelped, quickly scanning the room. I heard a chuckle and looked back to see Toby laughing, my keys dangling from his index finger.
"Come on love," he chuckled, "just do one last scan of the room, we need to leave to we can get to the airport in time for our flight." I laughed and turned my attention to the almost empty flat. Toby and I had started flatting together almost a year ago, and even in the short space of time, this place felt like home. I almost didn't want to leave. I made my way to the door and after grabbing my bag off the counter, took my keys from Toby's hand.
"Ready to go?" he asked me with a smirk.
"Yeah, let’s do this!" I laughed, walking out of the door. I turned and locked the door behind me. I stared at the door and sighed deeply, I jumped slightly when I felt Toby’s strong arms pull me into a hug.
"Don't be nervous, we'll be fine." He smiled down at me reassuringly. I grabbed his hand, and gave a small smile.
“We’ve got to go!” I giggled, pulling him down the hallway into the waiting elevator. Once inside I pressed the button for the car park and leaned up against the wall, a deep sigh found its way out of my lips again and out of the corner of my eye I saw Toby turn to face me.
“You okay, love?” Toby asked, looking at me with a half-smile.
“Yeah, just nervous” I laughed, turning to meet his eyes. They seemed to stare straight into my mine and I found I couldn’t tear my eyes away. His eyes were emerald green with flecks of gold and blue; they looked like great pools of liquid jewels. They seemed to show every emotion; they darkened when he was mad, sparkled when he was excited, and you could even see the evil glint when he was planning something. His eyes were framed by two lines of perfect lashes, long and dark, the kind of eyelashes that every girl wished they had. I finally tore my eyes away and he laughed, placing our suitcases on the ground as we stepped out of the elevator. We stood there for a few seconds before I took a deep breath and reached for my case.
“Oh no, I’ve got it” Toby smirked and batted my hand away as he clasped the handle of my bag.
“Tobyy, you know I can carry my own suitcase!” I whined looking at him with puppy dog eyes.
“Nope!” he chuckled, “I’m being a gentleman and such!”
I laughed and followed him to the car, opening the boot for him before he could protest. He glared at me and grumbled something about him being the gentleman and could open the boot himself, I poked my tongue out at him and slid into the passenger seat. I turned the radio on and started singing along to Taylor Swift’s new single as I waited for Toby.
I heard the boot slam and waited for the driver’s side door to open.
It never did.
I sensed something was wrong before it happened. I almost leaped out of the car and just as I slammed the door, the sound of a gunshot echoed through the concrete car park.
“TOBY!” I screamed, running towards the sound of the shot, not caring that I was potentially running straight into a line of fire. “TOBY WHERE ARE YOU?!” I half screamed, half cried, I was beginning to lose it, he had to be alright, he was all I had.
And that was when I saw him.
Toby. He was lying against a wall, clutching both hands to his side and I could see blood already pouring in between his fingers. I screamed and sprinted over to him, tears already streaming down my cheeks.
“No! Toby! Nooo!!!” I cried into his chest. He looked at me, pain evident in his eyes. Eyes that were once playful and sparkly, were now glassy and dull. “You’re going to be fine! Okay!” I said firmly, not sure whether I was trying to convince him or myself.
“A-a..ri.” He grunted, wincing at the pain. “C-call the..agh” he gasped, clutching his side.
“What? Toby?!” I almost pleaded.
“An ambul..ance Ari. I n-need help.” I almost punched myself, of course he needed an ambulance Ariadne. Idiot.
I instantly pulled out my phone and pressed the numbers, holding the device to my ear.
“Hello, emergency services. Police, Fire or Ambulance?” Came a crackled voice down the line.
“MY NAMES ARIADNE AND MY BEST FRIEND JUST GOT SHOT IN THE CAR PARK OF OUR APARTMENT BLOCK AND HE NEEDS HELP! PLEASE COME! HURRY!” I practically shouted down the receiver.
“Hey now, calm down, love. Where exactly is your apartment?” someone answered.
You idiot Ari, how on earth were they supposed to know where you were. I scolded myself. “Oh right. Uh.. OH!” I replied, “Ridgewood apartments, 4101 Postgate Terrace.”
“Someone will be with you as soon as possible. Make sure you stay by your friend.” They said and hung up. I slid my phone shut and turned towards Toby. The sight of him made me want to break down and cry. There was my best friend in the entire world, lying there with a bullet in his side. I couldn’t even imagine the excruciating pain he must be in. A sob caught in my throat as I knelt down next to him and finally gave in, letting the tears flow into Toby’s chest.
Suddenly a rough hand grabbed my arm, another covering my mouth preventing the scream from escaping my lips. I whipped my head around to see someone in a grey hoodie and black ski mask chuckle darkly as they glared at me. Their brown eyes looked dark and vengeful and it was like I could see the hate clearly reflected in them. I felt lightheaded and realised I’d been holding my breath, something flashed in the attackers eyes as they realised this and used their thumb and forefinger to swiftly plug my nose while their palm still held my mouth firmly shut. I squirmed in their grasp, fighting for oxygen as stars began to form before my eyes.
“Yo Tobs. She’s almost out, you can get up now.” I heard the unfamiliar voice of my captor call out, soon after I heard footsteps, as my so-called-best-friend came into my line of vision. He chuckled darkly as he wiped a hand on his blood-stained shirt.
“Good.” I heard Toby finally say, and then the world around me faded to black.
