Chapter Two
I awoke to the sound of a radio, my head was fuzzy and I found I couldn’t open my eyes. I decided it was probably better if my eyes were closed and I could pretend I was asleep anyway. I focused my attention to the voices in front of me, there appeared to be two people muttering quietly to each other and I attempted to listen in to their conversation.
“Yeah but then what?” I heard one of the voices whisper.
“Then, we dispose of her, idiot.” A voice I recognised as Toby, said pointedly. “Yeah but how?”
“I don’t know man, last time I checked, you were in this too. I’m not going to come up with everything.” Toby stated bitterly. I heard shuffling and tried to even my breathing to make it look like I hadn’t woken, hoping that whatever was happening, they weren’t planning to kill me. I took this moment to think about everything. I was supposed to be on a plane to London for Uni, but no. I had been kidnapped. And my best friend Toby.. what had happened with Toby? One moment he was on the ground, pale-faced and surrounded by blood, and the next he was on his feet like he hadn’t just been shot. Which admittedly, I had not seen happen. So perhaps I didn’t know my best friend like I thought I did. Maybe he’s wasn’t the person I knew.
Maybe.
God Ari, you’re over thinking everything, there will be some rational explanation for what’s happened. It was just Toby playing a joke on you, everything’s fine! And hey, this is probably a dream and you’ll wake up and walk out into the kitchen of your flat, and Toby will be sitting at the table scoffing down his weet-bix, and you’ll tell him about this and he’ll laugh and wrap you in a bear hug, chuckling something about how he’d never do something like that to you. Everything will be normal.
I tried to shake the image of Toby getting up off the blood stained ground, as if nothing had happened, not even trying to help me out of the iron-grip of the mystery person. His eyes shining with a new kind of darkness. The kind you imagined on murderers and kidnappers.
“Dude, she’s still out.” the mystery voice pointed out.
“Well do something to wake her up then!” Toby practically shouted. I almost flinched as his tone, this was not the usual Toby, I’d never heard him like this.
“Uh, okay..man what the hell am I supposed to do.” The voice sighed. “I’m new at this, bro.”
I heard an exasperated sigh coming from Toby as the car violently jerked to the side. I slid sideways on the smooth leather seats and the tattered length of rope binding my hands and ankles burned against my skin. All of a sudden the car screeched to a stop and I fell forwards, off the seat and into the seat in front of me.
“Argh!” I gasped as my nose hit the head rest in front of me. I cringed as I felt the warm sensation of blood filling my nose.
“Morning sunshine!” I heard Toby chuckle darkly and I found myself unable to speak. This was my best friend! What was he trying to do?!
“Well we don’t quite know yet, love. But we’re working on that.” He muttered. I looked at the back of his head, confused, how did he know what I was thinking? His eyes met mine in the rear view mirror, and I looked away quickly. He laughed, eyes narrowed, “yes sweetheart. You did say that out loud.”
I looked around me, suddenly aware of the potential danger I was in. It was like Toby was a different person. I didn’t know who he was anymore. I looked to my side and saw the doors were locked. Damn.
