Chapter 4
Christian’s P.O.V
I turned to Toby as he locked the door, “dude, that was a bit much, don’t ya think?” He smirked at me and waved his hand in the air. “Well I don’t see what else would have worked that perfectly?” He looked at me questioningly. I shrugged and followed him through the warehouse out to the car.
We hopped into the front seats and Toby started up the car. “So what’s the plan for today?” I asked, looking out the front window. “Well I guess we should get some food and stuff for Ari.” Toby said nonchalantly. He turned the car into the Walmart parking lot and weaved through the crowded maze, eventually pulling into a space. We jumped out of the car and walked towards the entrance, Toby clicking the lock over his shoulder as we stepped through the doors. He grabbed a basket and I fell into step beside him.
“So what exactly are you planning to do with her?” I asked, trying not to look too interested.
“Well I don’t know how long we can keep her in the warehouse, we’ll probably need to put the plan into action sooner than we’d thought.” Toby mused, chucking a chicken sandwich in the basket. He moved over to a shelf holding drinks, and put a 6-pack of bottled water in with the sandwich. I picked up a couple of apples and placed them in a bag, throwing them towards Toby. He caught the bag and set it in the basket. We moved on to the next isle and he picked up a hair brush and some shampoo, I plucked a toothbrush from the rack and tossed it to Toby. We rounded the corner and almost ran into Ari’s mother; Katherine. She looked a wreck; she was wearing old sweatpants and a baggy t-shirt, her hair was tightly tied back and she had large dark bags under her dull, glassy looking eyes. “Shit.” Toby muttered, ducking and pulling me into the next isle.
“Toby?” I heard Katherine say, and I peeked through a row of muesli bars. "Toby..no I couldn’t have..He’s in London..” She trailed off, clearly confused.
“Shit. Shit. Shit.” I turned at the sound of Toby, who was running a hand through his hair, looking stressed. “S’all right Tobs, she thinks she’s seeing things.” I chuckled, slapping a hand on his shoulder and continuing down the isle. We chucked a few more things into the basket and cautiously made our way to the checkouts, thankfully avoiding Ariadne’s mother.
“Yep, definitely going to have to leave sooner rather than later.” Toby sighed as we dumped our bags into the boot. I strolled around to the passenger side door and pulled on the door, it didn’t open. “Toby can you unlock the door.” I asked, leaning against the side of the car. “Oh right, uh...keys..” He muttered, patting his pockets. He looked up at me, a panicked look spreading across his face. “I must have dropped them when we ran from Katherine.” He groaned.
“Missing something?” A voice asked sharply. Toby spun around and came face to face with Ariadne’s mother.
“Wha-oh hey Katherine.” He said, chuckling as he reached for the keys. “So tell me Toby.” She said, pulling the keys out of Toby’s reach. “Why are you not in London?” She raised her eyebrows suspiciously, He looked at her for a moment before replying. “I-uh..Well, I came back to see how you were, y’know with what happened and everything.” He looked down, shuffling his feet against the concrete. He looked up and instantly her face softened. “Oh, well that’s very sweet of you Toby. I'm doing alright, I guess.” She sighed, “I suppose it hasn’t really sunk in that she’s actually gone. I've just been moping around the house, this is the first time I've stepped outside the front door, and it was only because I needed milk.” She glanced down at the bottle in her hand and sighed again. “Well. I must go, I’ll see you later Toby.” She said, handing the set of keys over, turning and walking to her car. Toby unlocked the door and slid into the front seat, I climbed in beside him.
“Well, that was close.” I muttered. “Tell me about it.” He said, letting out a shaky breath. He put the car into reverse and pulled out of the car park. We turned onto the highway and Toby directed the car to my apartment, telling me to pack a fair bit as he didn’t know how long we’d be gone. I climbed the stairs to my room and slid my suitcase out from under my bed, mindlessly shoving items into it. When I decided I had enough I zipped it up and set it by the door. I then changed into a pair of jeans and a white v-neck shirt, slipped on a pair of toms and walked out the door.
“Pack enough?” Toby muttered sarcastically as chucked my suitcase in the open boot. “Hey, you said you didn’t know how long we’d be gone!” I said defensively, holding up my hands as I walked around to the passenger seat. Toby already had packed, as he had to make it look like they really were going to London for Uni.
“Did you get the tickets mate?” I asked, watching as Toby punched something into his phone.
“Yeah, we leave in about 3 hours.” He said starting up the car. We eventually pulled up at the warehouse and hopped out, I walked in first and unlocked the sliding door to get in. I zigzagged through the maze of hallways, until I came to Ari’s room. I pulled on the handle and was surprised to find it unlocked. “Shit.” I muttered as I swung the door open to reveal the empty room.
“Uh Toby. We have a slight problem...” I trailed off.
“What?” Toby said, rounding the corner and stopping dead when he saw the empty room. I stared in disbelief as my eyes fell on the shattered light bulb and then at the unlocked 9-pin lock.
“Ari’s escaped.”
