Chapter 18

 ARI/SYDNEY'S P.O.V

“I’m pretty sure I’m going to fail this test.” Toby groaned, rubbing his temples with his fingers. “I’m terrible at Biology, I don’t even know why I took it.” He slammed the textbook shut and pushed it aside, grabbing the half-gone milkshake in front of him.

“All I know is that I’m so glad I dodged a bullet on that one.” I laughed, glad that my subject choices did not include any sciences. Toby however, was taking Physics, Biology and Chemistry. “I don’t even know why you took all three sciences, Tobs. I don’t know how you keep from going insane.”

He laughed as he finished off his milkshake, setting the glass back down on the table. I watched as he moved to pull another textbook from his bag, probably another science. I smiled as I leaned back against the padded seat in our booth, this was our routine and I loved it. Every day after school we’d come to the diner and just hang out, sometimes we’d study, but mostly we just talked.

“So Ari,” he began, his eyes shining with excitement, “are you coming to my party this weekend?” Toby was throwing his annual Halloween party, it was the biggest event of the year, and everyone was coming. It helped that he was one of the most popular football players in our school, so word got around fast.

“I don’t know, Toby. After what happened last time?” I sighed, looking down at my Geography textbook. I’d caught my now ex-boyfriend of 8 months making out with some girl from my Statistics class at Toby’s last party, and I didn’t know if I was ready to get back into partying after that.

“Oh come on, Ari. He was a jerk anyway, it was probably a good thing that happened or you’d still be with him.” Toby said, placing his hands over mine on the table. “He wasn’t worth it.”

“Thanks, Tobs. I’ll think about it.” I smiled quickly, picking up my Geo book and shoving it into my bag, tired of attempting to study.

“Okay, it won’t be as much fun without you though.” He pouted, his eyes suddenly widened. “No! You HAVE to come! We can go as Mario and Luigi!” He said excitedly, “Please, please, please, Ari!”

“Ugh, fine.” I sighed, I couldn’t turn him down on that, and he sounded so excited.

“Yes! Oh my god I love you!” He said happily, bouncing in his seat a little. What was I going to do with this boy?

***********

“Hurry up, Ariadne! People are starting to arrive!” Toby shouted down the hallway. I applied one last coat of mascara and smoothed down my Luigi overalls before moving to meet Toby in the living room. Already there were about 12 people in the room, all holding some kind of beverage.

“I’m here!” I laughed, moving to stand beside Toby as he welcomed people through the door.

“Hey, Ari? Would you mind setting up the stereo for me?” Toby asked, gesturing towards the large stereo on top of the bookshelf in the lounge.

“Sure thing.” I answered, walking over to the stereo and turning it on, placing the first cd from the stack into the drive. Five minutes later the room was packed with people, I decided to move outside to get away from the crowd and get some air.
