Chapter 22

Ari’s POV – The Hospital

“Can’t you just bloody well wake her up?”

I blinked at the sudden harsh light when I opened my eyes, a woman’s voice jolting me from sleep. I slowly sat up, rubbing the sleep from my eyes as I cautiously opened them again.

“Now look, Talia. You’ve woken her. Happy?” I heard a familiar voice grumble from beside me. I whipped my head around and my eyes met those of the person I least wanted to see.

“Toby.” I muttered, dropping my gaze from his.

“Hello sweetheart. Long time, no see. But don’t worry, you’ll be coming with us in a while. We just have to take care of some things first.” He grinned, taking my hand in his.

“Like hell I will.” I seethed, throwing his hand off mine. “I’m not going anywhere with you.”

“Listen here you little bitch.” I watched a woman emerge from my other side, a gun held in front of her aimed right at me. I recognised her, the woman that was helping Toby at the bar. I turned my head to the glass separating my room and the waiting room and she quickly shut the curtains, blocking the view of anyone outside the small room.

“Talia, Talia…” Toby said, rubbing his temples in what anyone would assume was frustration, but he was smirking and there was a hint of humour in his voice. He may not have wanted her to pull the gun out right now, but he’d definitely known she had it. Hell, he’d probably given it to her. I just stared at the pistol aimed right at my face, not saying anything for fear of angering ‘Talia’.

“Alright, Ari.” She spat, like my name was sour on her tongue. “Here’s what you’re gonna do. You’re going to come with us, no arguments. But first, we need to get those idiots out of the picture.” She smirked, gesturing to the door with the hand that held the gun.

“No, you can’t hurt them!” I gasped, an image of her walking out there and shooting them flashing through my mind.

“Hurt them? Oh dear, dear Ari. I can’t believe you think that I could do such a thing.” She said, placing a hand over her heart in mock offence. “Well, not physically at least.” And she was smirking again. “You’re going to write them a letter, a goodbye letter. Tell them you’re dying or something, I don’t know. Tell them the doctors don’t think you’ll make it, say your goodbyes, tie up loose ends, whatever, but make sure they know you’re gone. Then you’ll come with us to what I’m aware was your dear old boarding school before you and your mother came to America.” She finished, throwing a piece of paper and a pen towards me.

I picked them up and started writing. I wrote until Talia started getting impatient, telling me to hurry up or she’d just take what I had and that’d be it. I finished it off quickly and handed it to her, hoping the secret message I’d put it was obvious enough for the guys but not obvious enough for Talia, hopefully Alex’s obsession with crosswords would help me out here.

“Alright, now take this, it’ll knock you out. You’ve gotta look dead.” She winked, handing me a pill and a cup of water. I felt my blood run cold at the thought of what they could do to me while knocked out. I wouldn’t be able to fight back. I quickly swallowed the pill when I saw her reach for the gun again. Satisfied, Toby, Talia and another man I recognised as Christian began to move around, pulling clothes out of a bag and changing into them. Doctors clothes.
