Nick was gone. Days turned into weeks, weeks to months, months to finally two years. Ellie counted every day. It had been 743 days since she had last seen him, spoke to him. Her life had gone on as normally as if he was still there. But there were little things that were like papercuts. Small, insignificant, but constant painful reminders that he was gone. His presence was absent. His humor and constant banter, gone. Their moments in the bullpen, karaoke in the car, drinks at a bar after work. Just gone. But yeah, life was normal. Work filled most of it. Work plugged on. Gibbs and McGee followed in its wake. She trailed in theirs. Though each dead body was a tragedy, she found herself guiltily glad for the cases that dragged on. It lessened her time in thought alone when she had time to dwell on the fact that he was gone.

Normal. Her new favorite word of concealment. Maybe things were normal. But that didn't make up for the emptiness that plagued her every moment it got the chance to.
