Shoto's pov

Another droplet of water dripped down from the ceiling, splashing down on my nose. I shook my head to get rid of the water. I turned to look at Tamaki who was following up the rear of the group with me. My eyes trailed down to the burn that encompassed her neck. A hand almost matching my own. I turned away, clutching my left hand close to my body. I didn't do it. It wasn't my fault.
"I think we're lost" I looked over to the front of the group where Ojiro and Kirishima had stopped.
"How are we lost?"
"I thought the dummy would be down here but I guess I was wrong. Its just a dead end" Tamaki was looking around, face mostly obscured y her goggles.
"If its a dead end then what's that noise" I looked at Ojiro and Kirishima but we all went quiet, listening for whatever it was that Tamaki was picking up on. I could faintly hear what sounded like crying.
"Hey. That must be the dummy. So then where is it?" I leaned against the dead end, brushing the rock with my fingers in hopes of finding some kind of imperfection.
"Maybe we're looking in the wrong place" she started wandering around in circles. I watched with a raised brow. What was walking in circles going to do? Her head suddenly snapped onto a fixed point on the ground. She was promptly leaning her head against the ground.
"Its below us. We must have missed a collapsed area or something on the way over"
"Oh. So we can smash through here and get to the dummy that way. Alright. Lets go"
"I'm afraid I'll be of no use here. I'm not really a breaking rock type of fighter" she looked down at her feet, shoulders slumping.
"Don't worry about it. You've been a great help so far" Ojiro gave her a thumbs up right before Kirishima began punching the ground below us. The rock began cracking quickly so it must have been damaged beforehand. The cracks spread until the ground could no longer support our weight. I lifted up one hand, sending out ice in front of us so that we would slide down that instead of hitting the ground below. Once we all came to a stop on the floor below, I listened out for the crying. It was much more clear now than it had been before. Tamaki took the lead, running off ahead.
"Wait Aizawa. We're supposed to stick together in case something happens" Aizawa had already rounded a corner out of sight by the time Kirishima had finished the sentence.
"She's eager" I shrugged, taking a few steps forward to the corner. A yelp from further ahead caught my attention.
"Aizawa/Tamaki" There was no reply for a few seconds. Then a
"Fuck. Shit"
"Let's go. She might be hurt or trapped" we all started running to catch up. At the entrance to a larger Cavern was Tamaki. She was kneeling, legs spread out behind her and head bowed down. A rock sat on the ground next to her. I ran ahead of the others to check on her.
"Tamaki Are you alright? You aren't hurt right" She didn't respond. Her breathing was heavy and she was staring down at her lap, goggles absent. I looked around. The goggles were laying about 5 feet away from her. I reached out to pick them up. I felt a jolt through my fingers and retracted them quickly. I could hear Ojiro and Kirishima catching up and asking Tamaki the same questions. She finally started moving, fingers twisting into her hair and pulling on it.
"Fuck" her voice was shaking, head still tilted downwards.
"You can still stand right?" Kirishima had one hand on her shoulder and the other reaching up to her forearm. She didn't answer the question only continued putting together a string of curses with a progressively quieting voice. I kneeled down in front of her.
"Tamaki. Are you hurt?" she lifted her head, hands falling from her hair although a few strands went with them. I met her eyes. They were dull. I had never seen her eyes without the strange devices or her goggles up close before. Water trailed down her cheeks as she stared straight at me without a reaction.
"My goggles got damaged from the rock. I didn't get them checked after the camp so they must have been weakened. I can't wear them now" I nodded. That made sense. They did zap me when I just touched them so I can't imagine how painful it was for someone who had been wearing them when they'd been on the fritz. Kirishima stepped past me, hand hardened so he could pick up the goggles. They sparked again.
"Is there an off switch for these things?" she nods.
"At the side. It flicks upward to be turned off" Kirishima did so, the sparks calming down for the time being.
"You might as well leave them. They aren't of use to me like that"
"Its just some kind of night vision or something right. You can still wear them right. It'll keep any dust out of your eyes for your quirk"
"I said just leave them" she snaps, getting to her feet quickly. No one spoke. She turned her head.
"I'm sorry. I shouldn't have yelled. Let's just keep going" her voice had deflated almost. Both Ojiro and Kirishima were hesitant but took the lead into the cavern. I stayed by Tamaki's side in case there was some kind of damage that she had sustained. I watched her with a keen eye. She was shuffling her feet with every step and her head bowed while her shoulders were raised. I stepped closer, reaching out my hand until it brushed against hers. She lifted her head.
"Its not that bad. If you still have the blueprints then you can replace them right" I whisper, not paying much attention to what the others were saying. She stopped walking. I halted a few steps ahead of her. She lifted her head.
"Its not the goggles that are the problem" the tears were back. I blinked.
"Then what?" she tried to make herself smaller, holding her body closer.
"Promise you won't tell anyone" she was staring down at my feet.
"I promise" she took a deep breath.
"I-" she bit her lip then shook her head.
"I'm blind" she was staring right at me again. I blink, thinking back on it. There were things that were starting to make more sense now.
"How-"
"My eyes slowly started deteriorating until it left me blind. I lost all sight when I was about 5. That's what my goggles and the little devices I have are for. They allow me to see. Without my goggles I'm basically quirkless. I'm worse than quirkless. At least they can defend themselves. I can't even fight like this. Without my goggles, I can't see anything. I'm worthless" she fell to her knees. I kneel in front of her again, one hand on hers. She lifts her head, meeting my eyes.
"You know how to fight right? So why would that go away when you can't see" she blinked, staring at me with wide eyes.
"And your ears are really good. I mean you picked out those spiders and the crying like it was easy" She shook her head.
"That's nothing special. My hearing is the same as yours. I just rely on it more because of my eyes"
"So why not use them for fights" she looked down at her hands. Then engulfed me in a hug. I stared ahead for a moment before returning the action.
"Hey Todoroki, Aizawa. We found the dummy"
"Come on. They might need our help" she nods, retracting her arms. I got to my feet, offering my hand.
"Let me help you up" she reaches out her hand, linking it with mine. She didn't let go when we were both on our feet. My face flushed and I was thankful that she couldn't see that. I started walking and she kept a hold of my hand. It felt nice. I could get used to it.
