Shoto's pov
The line in the cinema was quite long. A lot of people had come to see the new movie and were having their tickets checked by the guy at the doors to the multiple screens on this floor. I stood next to Tamaki who was rubbing her fingers against the plastic bag with her shopping in it. Behind us were Shinso and Kaminari who were just talking and Amajiki and Togata were cuddling behind them. Some people were giving our groups odd looks. Lots of raised lips and noises that I have heard when someone didn't like their food.
"Why is everyone looking at us like that?" I lean towards Tamaki.
"Its because they don't like 'The gays'" she did air quotes with her fingers. I looked around. They weren't looking at either of us or Shinso and Kaminari. It was Amajiki and Togata. Wait haven't they been called boyfriends before. So that's why. It was our turn to have our tickets looked at. The guy checked over our tickets then handed them back. We walked into the cinema and into the screen our movie was on. Our seats were a couple rows in with a good view of the entire screen from the middle. I sat down in one seat. Tamaki was next to me, tucking her legs up on the seat. All our food was set up for when the movie started. I put one of the popcorn buckets in my lap.
"If you want some then you can take it" I gesture to the popcorn. She nods, sipping some of her slushie. It was placed back into the cup holder. The movie ads picked up. I turned the volume of my phone down just like the others and shoved it in my bag. The movie ads lasted for about 15 minutes and the age warning for the movie came up only to fade out after a minute and the movie started. It was pretty tame at the start, setting up the story of this group of teens that had moved into an old house together. It was in English but they also had Japanese subtitles for the movie. The movie was going along like any other normal movie would when something jumped out at one of the main characters. I flinched a little but a squeak came from beside me before two hands gripped onto my sleeve and someone's face was shoved into my shoulder. I looked to the side where Tamaki was hiding her face, hair spreading out over my shoulder. My heart was thudding against my chest and my throat felt tight. Tamaki moved her head to look at the screen only to squeak again when the character was having limbs torn off by the unseen beast. I wanted to ask if she was alright but I had heard people hushing others in the theatre so I kept my mouth shut. Every time there was some kind of gore or jumpscare, Tamaki would bury her face into my shoulder, gripping my sleeve tight. When it was regular moments in the movie she would just lean against my shoulder, hands brushing across my arm which left the hairs under my shirt prickling against them. Tamaki also hadn't noticed how hard my heart was beating or if she had she just didn't do anything about it. Maybe she thought it was from the movie, I had heard that your heart speeds up when watching horror. That's probably why my heart was thundering like a rabbit against my ribs. When the movie decided that it was time to end, -not without a final jumpscare at the end that left Tamaki with her knee pushing against the popcorn tub and knocking it over my lap- we all prepared to leave. I brushed popcorn off my lap, picking up the tub which still had some popcorn remaining. I offered some to Tamaki. She looked in the tub, reaching a hand in and picking up a few pieces and popping them into her mouth. Deciding that I'd just bring the tub and I could finish the popcorn on the way home. When we left the cinema, the sun was setting and the sky darkening. I bid farewell to Tamaki and the others, heading towards the car I had spotted. I had expected Fuyumi but it was dad. I sighed, dropping myself in the passanger seat. Dad looked over to me then back to the road.
"What happened to your ear?"
"I got it pierced" his grip on the stearing wheel tightened.
"Alright" his voice was strained but he didn't say anything.
"So how did your date go?" I shoved som popcorn into my mouth.
"It wasn't a date. It was just a hangout with a friend... and her brothers.... and their friends" I shoved more popcorn into my mouth when I had finished that sentace. Dad tapped the steering wheel. He glanced at me when we came to a red light.
"I talked with Tamaki. That's all" his face lifted.
"A first name basis now?" his voice hinted at his intrigue.
"Yeah because we're friends" I made sure to emphasize the term so he would actually keep it in mind. It was quiet.
"Well, I took the advice you were given-"
"What advice?" I raise an eyebrow.
"If you would let me finish" he glanced at me. I shoved more popcorn in my mouth.
"I booked an appointment with a therapist. To see if you really do need therapy" he tapped his fingers on the wheel. I nearly choked on popcorn.
"*Cough* What?" I coughed out, staring at him.
"I gave it some thought. You're appointment is on Sunday. Its just a single one and if the therapist says you need it then I'll book more. But only if they say so. Not your friend" I shoved more popcorn into my mouth in an effort to not scream at him for that final comment.
"Alright fine" I mumbled, fiddling with the rim of the popcorn bucket. He hummed in agreement before going quiet. Neither of us spoke for the entire journey back. I was fine with that though. It was nicer than talking anyway.
