< "Pleasure of love lasts but a moment. Pain of love lasts a lifetime." >
"Gen is heree!!!" She yelled as she loudly closed my front door. "The kitchen!" I yelled back and she waltzed into where I was and I excitedly turned my laptop around for her to see.
She shrugged off her jacket to reveal the top of her leotard and rested both elbows on my counter. She tilted her head to the side and frowned in confusion.
"Riley honey, what am I looking at?" She asked and I turned my laptop back around. The screensaver came up and it was an old picture of Gio.
"I haven't had a chance to change that," I stuttered as I tried not to stare at it for too long. I quickly removed it and turned the screen back around.
She smiled as she looked at the screen. "Internships? Ri, this is great! You're finally getting back on track. What are you considering?"
"Engineering," I said with a wide smile. I truly was excited, for the first time in literally months.
"But aren't you like already an engineer?" She asked and I frowned and shook my head. "I grew up in my dad's garage, it's not the same as having the degree," I explained and she shrugged.
"Are you gonna get the degree?" She asked and the thought of going back to university didn't sit well with me. I've always wanted to be a doctor since I was little and a surgeon seemed like a good career path at the time. I like fixing cars, so I assumed fixing people would be just as fun.
"Umm no, I can just get the internship and start there, I guess. Work my way up," I said as I turned the screen back around and she moved to join me. "So where are you planning on going?" She asked and I paused.
"You knew I was thinking of leaving?"
"Ri, I'm so happy you're considering going," Gen said with a sigh of relief and I turned to look at her. "You've been here your whole life. You need to get out and start fresh, gain new experiences-"
"Stop sugarcoating it." I deadpanned and she huffed. "You need to get away from Nolan and you definitely need to get away from Gio." She stated and I nodded.
"I think I need to get out too." I admitted as I closed my laptop screen.
I have no idea where I would go, or how I'd manage in a new city alone, but I think I'll be okay.
"Then let's start now," Gen encouraged as she reopened my laptop screen and started scrolling at the available options.
"Okay, so you have options in London, Paris, Chicago, ooo you could go to Tokyo!" She listed and I was happy that she was excited for me.
For the first time in a while, the weight of my past isn't on me. I'm not questioning every decision I've made, but focusing on the ones I'm gonna make.
Leaving is a step, granted it's a really big step since I'm probably gonna be in a different time zone, but it's a step regardless.
I'm gonna be okay. I just need to get out.
