Alex&Luke

"Goodbye love" Alex says as she feels Luke's hand go cold. The beep from the monitor is constant.

She thought she had been ready,

she thought she was strong enough,

but she wasn't.

Luke's cancer had gotten the best of him, leaving Alex with all his flannel shirts she loved wearing.

The smell of Luke constantly filling her nose,

It was the best feeling in the world.

But now, she would never be able to have him by her side.

Never be able to reach out for him on bad nights.

Now she would only feel the cold, emptiness beside her.

Moving on

That's all she's told to do

But the only thing she couldn't do.

Long nights of insomnia haunted her,

All the people around, all the music, all the life, blurry. Pushed from thought.

Wearing his shirt was just pouring salt into an open wound. But that's all she was able to do to keep him alive in her heart.

Drinking his favorite tea

Visiting his favorite book shop, never understanding what was so special about it.

Until one night, while sitting in his favorite spot, drinking his favorite tea, wearing his favorite flannel shirt Alex noticed a little board on the wall with notes on it. She stood up to take a closer look.

All kinds of notes hung on the board, love notes, memory notes, heartbreaking notes.

But it was one that made her step closer, a single note, standing out.

I will always be alive, in your heart, not in my shirts, or in my tea, or in my bookshop but in your heart.
