Chapter 23
"Where's Vic?" I asked, setting my lunch tray next to Mike's. The whole trio was here but of course I noticed Vic was missing. My clingy self just wanted to talk to him.
"Um, he said he was going to go off campus to have lunch with Craig," Mike casually said, taking a bite of his sandwich.
I felt a small spark of jealousy float through my body but I did my best to deny it. After all, they're only cousins.
"Oh, okay." I said blankly.
"Mhm, why do ask?" Mike said.
"I was just wondering about some uh, french work," I lied. "I guess they're some pretty close cousins?"
Mike gave me a skeptical look before swallowing the food in his mouth. "Cousins? Craig isn't his cousin."
He must be joking, right? He's probably confused.
"Um, yeah they are. Vic told me last night. . ." I said because it was true.
"Actually no, Craig is just Vic's friend." Mike said and as soon as he did, his expression totally changed. He cursed under his breath and looked at me warily.
Wait, so Vic lied to me?
"They're really not cousins?"
Mike was hesitant to speak but he was crazy if he thought I would let this go. "Yeah, they've been friends for a long time."
I nodded, processing the new information. Why would Vic lie to me though? He seemed genuine when he explained the situation last night. Am I just that easy to fool?
"Why did Vic lie to me?" I asked Mike.
"I don't know."
"Yeah, you do. You're his brother," I said.
"So, that doesn't mean we're complete besties and paint each other's nails. Why don't you just ask him?"
I sighed, knowing he was right. But I mean, you would think they would tell each other things. What if Mike was covering for him? Covering what exactly though? It must be more than just the cousin thing. Or am I overanalyzing?
For the rest of lunch, I detached myself from asking Mike questions. It pissed me off because there is a possibility that he knows something, but I know I wouldn't be able to get the truth out.
By the time I was in French, I was really anxious to see Vic. I wasn't going to straight up tell him about Craig, because Mike may be wrong. I need a little more proof that Vic is lying to me in order to confront him. Last thing I want is to look like a fool.
Just as the late bell rung, Vic walked inside the classroom and immediately made his way to the spot next to me.
"Hey," he whispered. I looked at him and faked him a smile. The whole idea of him lying to me did upset me.
The class went on like normal and we learned new vocabulary. I couldn't concentrate though. Negative thoughts surrounded me, and I couldn't control them.
