"You should try this one on," Chase holds up a spaghetti strapped, short, flowy light pink dress.
"Definitely not," I scrunch my face up in disgust. "Too pink."
"Okayy," he puts it up with a small pout, "how about this?" He holds up a long, elegant black dress."This is a school dance, not a funeral," I laugh.
"Okay, I admit it," he holds his hands up in surrender, "I know nothing about dresses."
"I've noticed," I snicker and he sticks his tongue out at me. "We are wearing purple, because it's my favorite color."
His face scrunches up in disgust, "purple is a girly color."
"And pink isn't?" I motion to the previous dress he showed me.
"Good point." He smiles sheepishly.
"I am going to try on these three dresses," I hold up the small pile in my hands, "and we'll go from there."He looks shocked, "when did you grab those??"
"When you weren't paying attention, apparently," I laugh.
He follows me to the dressing room and waits outside the door with the other two dresses.
As I undress, I hold his hoodie against my nearly bare chest for a few seconds and take a deep breath of his scent. I gently lay it on the ottoman in the corner before taking my leggings off and putting them next to it. I unzip the first dress and step into it, pulling the straps over my shoulders and trying desperately to zip it up myself.
"I, uh, think I'm gonna need help zipping this up," I say, embarrassed.
"Okay," he says as I open the door and let him in.
He closes the door behind him and hangs the other two dresses on the back of it before sliding behind me and grabbing the zipper.
He looks at me through the mirror as I move my hair out of the way, "you're beautiful, you know that, right?"
I blush, "just zip it up."
He leans forward and whispers in my ear, "your wish is my command, princess." He slowly zips up the dress and goosebumps erupt across my shoulders. He slides my hair back behind my shoulders and wraps his arms around my waist.
"I like it."
I carefully move his hands off of me and step closer to the mirror, examining the dress. "I don't know," I twirl slowly in it. I shake my head, "okay, unzip it so I can try the next one."
He moved my hair back over my shoulder and unzips it painfully slowly. Once he's done, he just stands there waiting for me to move.
"Get out," I laugh. He pouts before sliding out the door.
I slide the dress off of my shoulders and step out of it before grabbing the second dress and putting it on. "Ew, definitely not," I look at it through the mirror even though it isn't zipped up.
"Let me see it," Chase says through the door.
"It's atrocious, it's too light of a purple," I shake my head even though he can't see me. I slide it off without a second thought and grab the third one from the door and slide it on.
"Okay," I sigh and open the door.
He slides into position and zips up the dress for me.I look in the mirror and see this faraway look on his face as he takes in the dress. "What?" I ask, smoothing the tulle skirt down.
"That's the one," he whispers.
I take in the sight of the dress and realize he's right. It's perfect. "I guess it is," I smile. He grabs my hand and twirls me around, making the skirt fluff out and cascade around me.
As he slows me to a stop, he wraps and arm around me and dips me with a big smile on his face, "it definitely is."
He slips out of the dressing room after unzipping the dress and I admire it for a few more seconds before taking it off and putting my clothes back on.
I walk out of the dressing room with all three dresses in my arms and join Chase.
"I'll put these back for you," Chase grabs the two dresses out of my hand and puts them back on the rack.
"Now let's go check out and find me a tux," he grabs my hand and intertwines our fingers as we walk to that registers.
I hand the cashier the dress with a smile and immediately go to grab my wallet out of the hoodie pocket but Chase stops me, "I'm getting it for you."
"Chase, that's a lot of money! It's like..."
The cashier fills in the price for me, "one-hundred and fifty-seven dollars and sixty cents."
"Holy shit," I mutter under my breath so only Chase and I can hear it.
"I got it," he smiles at me and hands the cashier his credit card.
"Homecoming?" She asks, indicating the dress.
"Yeah," I nod with a nervous smile as the cost of the dress circles my brain.
"I hope you lovebirds have a great time," she smiles and hands Chase his card and receipt back.
I take the bag with the dress in it, "thank you."
"He's a keeper," she says quietly with a wink.
I smile and nod in agreement, "have a good day."
"You too!" She chirps as we walk away.
As soon as we walk out of the store I say, "oh god, I think I'm going to be sick. You should not have bought that for me."
"Relax," he squeezes my hand, "it's a small price to pay for the view I get when you wear it."
I shake my head, "that's an insane amount of money for a dress."
He stops and pulls me over to face him, "just think of the memories you'll get with it. I surely can think of one I'm looking forward to," he winks with a smirk.
I roll my eyes and shake my head with a small smile, "get your head out of the gutter, Hudson."
He chuckles, "I don't know, I'm rather fond of it."
I smack his shoulder, "let's go get you a tux."***
