Me and Mr. Saltzman researched wraiths for the entire weekend, with the exception of the founders ball of course, which I thankfully got out of. I'm pretty sure we read every book in Ric's apartment and still only got basic info.
Apparently, a wraith is a harbinger of death. It can sense when death is coming and has visions of death in the future. A wraith is a keeper of balance, meaning if you're meant to die, but don't, or you come back to life, it'll feel an intense need to kill. It meaning me apparently. Which is especially freaky cause I really don't want to kill anyone. I mean maim or injure... there's definitely a list. But not kill.
A wraith is awakened when another wraith dies. So I wonder if it's just a random selection and f which poor sap gets to be a harbinger of death next. And it looks like I won the lottery. Those visions I've been getting in my sleep are finally explained.
"Nora." I snapped out of my deep contemplation. Stefan must have noticed that I had dozed off in history class. "Are you okay?"
"Well, that's a really open ended question." I said, still a bit hazed from sleep deprivation. "How are you by the way? Elena said you were acting weird at the founders party."
His attitude changed immediately. As if he was hiding something. "I... she said that?"
"Yeah... and, not gonna lie, I kinda agree..."
"Well, I'm fine now." He said. "Where were you during the founders party anyway? Charlie was there asking about you."
"I was just reading up on something." I said. "Have you ever heard of a wraith?"
"In mythology, yeah." He replied. "Why?"
I glanced to the front of class, where Mr. Saltzman was fully focused on teaching about the Founders Day for the entire block period. "Well they're supposed to be harbingers of death who are meant to keep the balance between life and death." I thought hard before saying anything else. "And I've been having weird dreams... about wraiths."
"Wow... that's weird. Do you know why?"
"Not really..."
After school, I watched Elena and Stefan flirt during their rehearsal for Miss Mystic Falls. At first I thought she didn't want to do the pageant but she looks like she's having fun now. Later on, Bonnie walked into rehearsal with Caroline. I remembered what Grams said in my dream, I need you to tell Bonnie I love her and I believe in her...I ran over to her once she and Elena were done arguing about something. "Hey, Bonnie, can I tell you something?"
Bonnie forced a smile. She seemed pretty bummed out. "Yeah, go ahead."
"Well, firstly, I'm really sorry about what happened to your grandma." I said. I could tell she was about to say that 'thank you, it means a lot' that you keep repeating and rehearsing after you lose someone, because only then do people suddenly give a crap about you. But I continued, "Also, for what it's worth, I get the feeling she would be really proud of you."
"Nora, I-"
"I just happen to know for a fact that she loves you and believes in you." I said, matter of factly. "Uh, that's it. Bye!"
It was the day of Miss Mystic Falls. I couldn't even begin to explain how wrong it went. First of all, I heard from Mr. Saltzman that Stefan was apparently 'on edge' at school, which can never be good. Then we all silently judged creepy uncle John as we left to go to the pageant without him. Except for Jeremy of course, because he just can't seem to sense toxic people when it really matters. But anyway, that was just the beginning...
Once I got there, I saw Damon talking to a girl in a little black dress, with her dark brown hair up. It was Anna. I had completely forgotten about her until she showed up. "Hi." I said, walking up next to her.
"Oh, hey." She said. "You're Nora, right?" She asked. I nodded. "I've seen you around. I really like your style by the way. Unfortunately, my mom still thinks that we have to al dress like prudes."
I smiled. Another instance of Anna proving to be a decent person. "Thanks. You're totally rocking the little black dress look though." I said. I was wearing a dark purple and black lace dress that fell above the knees. "And as a solution to the last problem. Keep fishnets and a miniskirt on you at all times so you can just change in a public bathroom."
"Wow. I can't believe I didn't think of that..." She said, smiling.
We both laughed for a while and I decided that Anna is officially okay in my book. "Alright, I'm gonna go mingle. It was nice talking with you." We said our goodbyes and I walked away from Anna, seeing Jeremy start to walk towards her. I gave him a thumbs up on the way there, to which he rolled his eyes.
I went upstairs to go check on Elena. When I got to the top of the lengthy flight of stairs, I saw Amber leave and Elena walk into the dressing room and close the door behind her. Though I could've sworn I heard two voices behind the door. I pressed my ear up against it and listened.
The other voice was Damon. "Stefan's still drinking human blood."
"What?" Elena sounded dumbfounded to say the least. To be honest, so was I.
"Yeah," Damon continued. "A month ago I would've rejoiced. But with the council back n the alert, it is not a good time for Stefan to fly off the handle."
"I know he's been a little bit edgy but he said that was normal."
"He has a fridge full of stolen blood-bank contraband in the house."
I stepped away from the door. Oh crap... that's really not good. Come to think of it, i don't think I've seen Stefan at all today. And I wonder where Amber was going twenty minutes before the pageant starts... "Oh crap."
(A/N - heyyy, part 2 is coming really soon btw)
