Haunted

I woke up the next morning in my bed, not wanting to move. I have school today. After all that, I have to go to school. I have to go to school and pretend that I don't know anything. I have to go to school and lie to Charlie. This should be fun. Then I remembered that Mr. Tanner is gone. We'll have a new teacher. Maybe that's a good thing? It sounds horrible to say now more than ever, but Mr. Tanner was not a very good teacher.

I throw on some clothes and walk past the bathroom where Elena and Jeremy are arguing about him skipping school to go to the search party for Vicky Donovan. I roll my eyes and walk downstairs. They're always fighting these days.

I get on my bike and ride to school. It's a quiet ride. Charlie wasn't ready for school by the time I was so I just rode alone. I need to put off lying to him as long as possible. I chained my bike to the bike wrack and walked into the school.

We had a sub in history. Guess they didn't find a teacher yet. We just watched a movie the whole time. Next I had English class. I sat down in my usual seat next to Charlie. "Hey, so you said you would fill me in?"

I look over at Charlie, who looks pretty excited. I sigh. "It's nothing interesting." I started. "She had a bad day, went over to Stefan's house, and then I assume they had sex."

"Oh." He looked disappointed. "That's... boring."

I put on a fake smile and laughed. "I know right."

"Ahem... please pay attention." The teacher scolded.

"Sorry, Ms. B."

"Sorry, Ms. B."

Ms. B. Is the scariest teacher you will ever meet. But she can be fun if she wants to. She's only 26 and has already had enough of our shit. I can't say it's her fault though. Our grade keeps the 'annoying freshman' stereotype alive. Thankfully, Charlie and I aren't a part of the problem. We're actually relatively well behaved in front of teachers.

After school I went home. There was supposed to be some boring Halloween fair at the school later but I don't think I'm gonna go. It's literally just a horror themed rave with a low budget. I go to the kitchen and see the container of brownies that Bonnie's Grams gave me. I open it up and eat one. They're actually not that bad. I was kinda concerned when she mentioned herbs cause I thought that it would either be pot or cilantro. I would rather not have either option in a brownie. I think the herb might be something like rosemary or chamomile, or maybe even lavender. Either way, it's a really good recipe.

Jeremy walks through the door looking edgy and emo as ever. "Hey, want a brownie?"

"Are those the ones Bonnie's grandma gave us? With the herbs?" He asks. I nod. "Are they pot brownies?"

"Nope." I take out a second one.

"Never mind then..." he takes out his phone and calls Vicky for the 5th time already

I roll my eyes and eat the brownie I was going to give to him, then put the container back in the refrigerator. Then Elena gets home. "Hey." She opens the refrigerator getting a bottle of water. "Do you guys wanna hang out tonight? We can go to that Halloween thing at school. Could be fun."

"Why not, I've got nothing better to do." I shrug.

"Cool, sure. Sounds fun. Can't wait." Jeremy starts to walk out of the kitchen.

"I know you're upset about Vicky," Elena said, stopping him. "I heard she called Matt today. But you can't be with her. She needs to get better. The best thing you can do is let her go."

Jeremy scoffed. "What does that even mean, 'let her go'?" He snapped. "Oh, okay sure. Since we're such experts on letting people go, right?"

"I know you may not see it." Elena said. "But trust me, Jer. It's for the best."
