Wilbur chuckled, locking eyes with the cowering blonde, his mahogany eyes glinting with a sadistic mirth that only Wilbur could have.
"Hello Theseus" he rasped, his voice hoarse and eyes gleaming with tears, to any outsider it would seem as though he had been crying.
Tommy knew better.
He knew that Wilbur had been watching the whole scenario go down, he had watched and had been silently laughing. Stifling his joy at Tommy's suffering, it was frustratingly familiar.
"Fuck off Wilbur" he spat, his voice cracking, all the bite and anger he tried to muster faltered, he sounded weak. He sounded helpless; exactly as Dream needed him.
Wilbur grinned, the weak firelight casting shadows on his face, his eyes seeming to glow. A silent chuckle leaving him. Every vial insult Tommy could think of died in his throat. Memories of Pogtopia flashed through his mind, the mental scars that were covered with humour and anger suddenly ripped open once more. He stumbled back as though he had been pushed; slamming his own back into the stone walls.
Wilbur started, probably to catch Tommy if he fell or hit his head. The subtle and almost gentle movement sent the blonde into a frenzy.
"No, no no" he screamed out, shoving the brunette away. "Go away, go away"
Wilbur froze, astonished not over the fact he had been shoved but, at the manic fear Tommy had shown.
"Tommy," he murmured softly.
"No, no fuck off. Fuck you. Get out, go away" he repeated cowering into the wall. Dream shifted his weight from one foot to the other.
"Why?" Wilbur asked, "why are you so afraid of me," he paused, swallowing "I'm here to help" he knelt down looking up at the teen. Trying to appear as non- threatening as possible. "Tommy" he repeated, "please, look at me" he pleaded. Tommy's short breaths became less muffled as he straightened out of himself to look at Wilbur. His eyes a vivid almost toxic blue glazed with tears. Had Wilbur done this? Or was it Dream?
His shoulders started shaking again; Tommy doubled down covering his head once more.
"FUCK OFF" he screamed, WIlbur stepped back to beside Dream and waited. The masked man tilted his head down and turned towards Wilbur as if to ask
'What are you doing?'
Wilbur motioned for him to calm down.
Tommy had had panic attacks before; Wilbur could help with the minor ones. But this wasn't just a panic attack. This was his last resort of defense. His fight or flight. The only thing they could do was to wait, the more anyone tried to interact with Tommy the more worked up he would get.
"Patient Dream. He's going to tire himself out" he muttered, not that it would have mattered if he yelled. Tommy was deaf to the world. The two watched the smaller boy huddling into himself, shuddering and sobbing.
Slowly Tommy calmed, his breathing becoming regulated and his muscles relaxed; as though he was sleeping.
"You've gone on so long Tommy," Wilbur said softly. "You've fought wars by yourself. You have given your soul to the ones you loved. Tell me what have you gotten in return?"
Tommy didn't answer, Dream held his breath. Wilbur's own keen eyes could tell by the way Tommy tilted his head slightly up so that his ear was exposed, that he was listening.
"Those people threw you off a cliff. It's tiring Tommy, I became so tired that I begged to die." Wilbur paused. "I don't want you to lay down and accept your fate. That's not you, that's not us."
The entire time, Wilbur had focused on the floor as he had spoken, only glancing up after hearing the muffled sound of Tommy shifting, the blonde was now watching him intently. His eyes no longer bright, dulled from tears and exhaustion.
"Aren't you tired Tommy?" he asked. Tommy nodded,
"Yeah" he said in barely a whisper, his voice hoarse and unsteady.
"Then I think it's time to stop pretending, let's try this again." he continued as though treading on eggshells.
Tommy was so tired, the exhaustion cutting deep in his bones. It sullenly ached in every joint, causing them to screech as he moved once more.
"What" he asked after a few moments. The pain increased as he attempted to muster the strength to speak.
"Let's be the bad guys again" Wilbur said, although it was posed more as a question,
'Will you be the bad guy with me?'
He waited with baited breath for an answer.
After a few seconds Tommy nodded.
"Yeah"
