A/N: This was meant to be a Christmas oneshot but I ended up super busy with dumb college payment stuff for the past few weeks v.v just pretend it's still December.
Keeping this secret from Eliza was one of the hardest things Alexander had ever had to do, hiding things from her never felt good. But it was Christmas! He had to get her something special for their first Christmas as a married couple, something so special she would remember it forever and think of it fondly. It's what she deserved, only the best for his Eliza.
Alex glanced at his knuckles, his grip on the wheel loose but firm. The gem glistening from his left hand made his heart flip inside his chest, they'd only gotten back from their honeymoon last week but he still couldn't believe it. He was the only Hamilton left for so long, the only one he could acknowledge anyway. He had a father and brother but they seemed to disappear the second his mother died so, in Alex's mind, they aren't true Hamiltons. Now there was another, a new Hamilton, his beautiful young wife.
A bark started Alex and he chuckled; two new Hamiltons. He could faintly hear nails clacking inside the kennel in the backseat as the newest member of the Hamilton family tried to settle. A Maltese mix or something like that, he didn't really pay attention to all that. Eliza liked small dogs more than larger dogs so Alex made sure to get the smallest puppy he could find.
The moment he turned into his driveway Alex felt his heart start to hammer in his chest, it almost felt like it was beating in his ears. He had meticulously planned this surprise and the fact that it was right here had him sweating. This was almost as bad as when he proposed!
Eliza should be upstairs right now on the computer with her online students but she should be done soon so he had to hurry. He ran inside with the kennel and set it down in the foyer, after opening the door he fished out the large present box nestled inside the coat closet. He prayed that the nameless dog would let him put her inside the damn box for five minutes.
Thankfully, she did.
Alex stared into the vast brown eyes of the puppy and felt a smile rise up his face, something about her was too cute. He scratched under her chin and she leaned into it like a cat, huh. Adorable.
Alex waited for the sound of Eliza's feet leaving their bedroom to jam the kennel into the closet and stand up with the present, closing the top. The red bow tickled his facial hair and he tried to ignore it, moving to the bottom of the stairs with a grin.
"Lex?" Eliza's heavenly voice flooded Alexander's senses and he tried to hide his joy.
"Lizzy," Alex replied before holding up the present, "Merry Christmas! I got it a bit early and it can't wait. Come open it! Hurry hurry!"
Eliza giggled as she glided down the stairs gracefully, must be her upbringing. When Alex descends the stairs he seems to be clambering, stomping on them. She was just...ethereal.
Eliza kissed his cheek, staying on the last step so they'd be nearly the same height, "Wonder what's so important it can't wait." She teased.
Alex could feel the dog moving within the box and a flash of nervousness went through him, "Why don't you find out, my beautiful wife?" It was hard to bury his emotions to appear nonchalant instead of how he really felt.
"Guess I will," With that, she lifted the top off of the box to reveal the sitting white dog. Eliza blinked as if she didn't understand what she was looking at before her mouth slowly fell open, "Oh my god!" She squealed.
Alex laughed as she lifted her from the box and let the dog lick her face, "So a good present?" He asked.
"Yes!" She yelled, tears starting to trickle down her face. Alex watched as she ran to the living room, setting down the new addition to the family and letting her run around, "Oh my god! Alex, Lex, what's her name?"
Alex shrugged as he sat next to Eliza on the floor, "She doesn't have one yet. I thought I'd let you name her since she is your present."
Eliza grabbed Alex's face making him jump and she placed an excited kiss on his lips. Shocking but he wasn't going to say no, "Holly." Eliza breathed as she separated their lips, "Since she's a Christmas present."
"Perfect," Alex replied. He wanted to reconnect his lips with Eliza but an excited nuzzle pushed itself onto their chins, "Oh geez." He mumbled.
Eliza pulled away from Alex and pulled Holly onto her lap, using her hands to rile her up. Her eyebrows furrowed for a moment and she looked back up at him, "She doesn't have a collar or dog tags."
Alex nodded, "Yeah well uh she didn't have a name either." He put a hand on Holly but pulled it back when she started playfully biting, "Meanie." He mumbled, "Anyway I was going to get her a collar tomorrow."
"Can it have a bow?" Eliza asked quickly, "A red bow! Red like real holly."
"She can have anything you want."
"Like a brother?"
"No. No more dogs."
Eliza giggled and Alex grinned, connecting his hand with hers. He looked at their rings, how perfect. He wished he had an heirloom ring to give her like all the other men in her usual social circle had.
Eliza noticed his gaze and squeezed his hand, "My wonderful husband." She hummed, "I love you more than life."
Alex blinked and then leaned in to steal a kiss before responding, "I love you more than existence."
