Eliza could already feel her blush as she approached her locker, she knew there would be a note inside it. She loved it, she loved them, it was all too much and just the right amount all at the same time. She opened it and sure as rain there it was, a little white envelope with a pink heart sticker closing it. She quickly opened it and her heartbeat soured five times higher.
Dearest Elizabeth,
I do think it's time we meet in person, don't you? I'll be waiting in the gym right after school next to the volleyball net.
~TShe had no idea who T was but he had her head over heels without her having ever seen him. Well, she obviously had to have seen him since he knew her so well but whatever. She just felt her heart want to rip out of her chest with each passing moment. She wanted, no, she needed school to go by quicker.
Quickly she got her books and grabbed the note, heading to her first hour, Art II, with the note held closest against her chest. She sat down and got her watercolor out before putting the note in the special little box she had that she stored all of them in. Her watercolor picture actually had letters coming out of a fireball of glory because she was so inspired by her seemingly Romeo and Juliet love life.
She couldn't focus today though and just read the letters again, reading and rereading them as her mind went spinning in all sorts of different directions from the sheer loveliness of it all. Somebody had taken the time to remember her small tics, like how she braided small parts of her hair when she got bored, just because they thought it was cute. This was definitely more than she could handle.
She didn't realize the class was ending until the teacher called out a warning. She then remembered she'd gotten her watercolor out and tried to get up quickly, bumping into somebody and spilling just water on them since she hadn't even used the color.
She tried to apologize but the boy who she didn't know but he had blonde hair just waved her off and then growled, "Watch where you're going, dyke." Eliza gasped but she couldn't say anything back, she wasn't the kind of person to defend herself.
"Hey," She looked up as a boy she could recognize, Thomas Jefferson, strode over, "Apologize." He told the blonde boy. At first, the blonde tried to run but Thomas grabbed his shoulder, "Now. And add on one for lesbians in there. Go on. I'm waiting."
Eliza saw his shoulder hold tighten and she knew it was painful but before she could say anything against it the boy stuttered, "I-I'm sorry Elizabeth and...and I'm sorry to lesbians too." He mumbled and Thomas let him go, he ran off.
"You didn't have to do that," Eliza said with a small smile, she didn't dislike Thomas but she wasn't sure about him. He was caring though and nice to her so she saw no reason to act anyway but the same towards him.
Thomas smiled, "No." He agreed, "I didn't. But I wanted to because it's just water, it dries." He shrugged and the bell rung so Eliza quickly put the watercolor away before taking her bag and walking out with the rest of the crowd. The question of who T was became more and more unbearable to deal with as the day dragged on.
Eliza was on autopilot basically all day. Who cared about running laps when T was out there? Who cared about triangles when T was out there? Who cared about the American legal system when T was out there? Who was he? Where was he? She needed to know. She needed him. It was odd to need somebody you don't even know if you've met but she absolutely needed him because she might be in love with a man she probably hasn't even met.
Finally, the bell went off. It made Eliza's head pound and her heart sing as she raced to her locker and put all her stuff away, barely remembering her jacket which she pulled on before she was off. She booked it to the gym, her little box against her chest with all her letters as she ran, dodging other people and weaving between them. She was given looks and people whispered but she didn't care, she was one step closer to T with each hallway she passed and each doorway she went through.
Finally, she made it to the gym, panting and bending down to hold her knees as she caught her breath. When all was better she looked up at the volleyball net and her mouth fell open, "Thomas!" She walked over to him and looked up, "How did I not figure out..?"
"No idea," Thomas replied truthfully. He noticed the box and stared at it curiously, "What's that?" He asked her bluntly.
"Oh it um..." Eliza blushed hard and opened it, "It-It's where I've stored all of your letters and notes and stickers. They were all so cute, well thought out, sweet, and kind I just...couldn't throw any of them away." She looked away and missed Thomas's growing smile.
"You know, this is why I fell for you. You're so innocent and gentle. Each thing you do makes me want to hold you tightly. So um Eliza may I...uh can I hug you?" Eliza wasn't used t him being shy, he'd always been confident in class.
She smiled however and nodded, putting her own arms around him. Even if she hadn't really interacted with him in person, even if they've never had a real conversation, even if she's only heard his voice four times before, even if their only communication ever has been one-sided letters and notes, even if they had polar opposite personalities, even if this was her first ever relationship, even if this hug was meant to be more, even if she was inexperienced...Eliza's pretty damn sure she's been in love for months.
