Trigger Warning: Abuse

Maria was married, he knew that. She had a child, he knew that. She was forced into multiple affairs, he knew that. She had to sleep around to survive, he knew that. She was abused, he didn't know that.

She sighed, Thomas was supposed to come over today. She hadn't been feeling well and wrote him such, he promised to come by that following day as soon as he received the letter. Maria had separated herself from her daughter, high fevers have always been deadly for young children. She sighed and closed her eyes, everything felt hot, she felt hot and sticky from sweat. It was disgusting.

The door creaked open and Maria turned to see Susan, "What's up baby?" She mumbled, forcing herself to sit up even though it upset her stomach a little bit to do so, "Is something wrong? Need something?"

Susan shook her head while still holding onto the doorknob, "Mommy my hair won't stay puts." She mumbled, her hair was just like Maria's but thicker, "It got in my foods." She mumbled and pushed her hair out, "I no get it out."

She sighed and got up, heading to her vanity and seat. She sat and beckoned Susan over, instantly Susan ran over and Maria picked her up and set her on her lap. She grabbed a wipe and buffed the food out of her curls, "Want me to tie it-" She turned away and coughed to the side, putting one hand on the side of Susan's face to protect her from it. She took a deep breath, "Tie it back?"

Susan nodded, "Yed please mommy..." She mumbled and Maria smiled, her daughter was honestly so polite. She pulled her hair back and grabbed a comb, carefully teasing her hair back before tying it.

"All done," She said, kissing the back of her head, "That should do it. I love you so much, Susan, I do." She held her, a part of her started to feel terrible inside and out as she realized how much she hurt her daughter by staying with that man, "I...I'm sorry for-"

"-For what?" She flinched and snapped her head to the door. Her eyes widened and she stared at him, her husband, in a mixture of fear and shock, "Let me guess, I'm not supposed to be home?" She nodded slowly, "It's hard not to when you hear your wife is having an affair."

Maria jumped up, setting Susan down on the chair, "What the heck? What do you care? You've never once in your life cared about these things. Actually, you forced me into affairs! What's it even matter to you?" She covered her face.

Stress was taking over quickly and Susan pulled on her skirt, "Mommy..." She mumbled, continuing to pull on her mother's skirt, "Mommy don't cry pwease..." She sometimes couldn't get her L's out.

Maria shook her head, "This isn't an affair I condoned!" James shouted and she shuffled Susan behind her to protect her, "I didn't say you could have sex with Alexander Hamilton you slut!" He shouted.

"Alexander Hamilton?!" Maria repeated in confusion though she kept her voice at the same volume. She blinked a few times before shaking her head, "I've never had an affair with Alexander Hamilton!"

James furrowed his eyebrows, "You're lying...you have to be." He raised his hand to smack her and she stood straight up, closing her eyes to prepare herself for the force she was used to being thrown at her.

It didn't come though and she peeked her eyes open only to squeak, "Th-Thomas!" She shouted in shock, he had James's wrist in a lock and had it twisted almost painfully. She blinked and stared at the two men in her life.

"Is this what he does?" Thomas growled anger stamped onto his face and hard set in his eyes, "This is why you disappear for a full month after he comes home?" He sounded angry but Maria didn't know who the anger was directed at.

She looked away and nodded, she couldn't lie to him. James turned to him, looking at him properly before raising an eyebrow, "Thomas Jefferson." He mumbled in shock before he turned to Maria, "You bitch! You're having an affair with the goddamn president and didn't tell me?! Do you know how much m-"

"-I don't care, James!" She shouted she wasn't about to allow him to make Thomas just another blackmailed cash cow. He started for her and she flinched back but instantly Thomas grabbed him.

"Is Susan here?" Thomas asked and Maria put her hand around her back, taking her daughter's hand and bringing her around, "Hey are...you alright, Maria? And does he hurt Susan?" He held him harder and James yelled.

Maria looked away instantly and stared at her daughter with her guilt flooding over her features, "He...He hurts h-her too and...I-I'm still sick you know...that doesn't go away o-over night." She mumbled.

Thomas huffed and punched him hard enough to knock him out, Maria screamed as James fell to the floor, "Why didn't you tell me?" He asked, crossing the room to her without another thought.

Maria let him pull her to his chest, closing her eyes as he rocked her and held Susan's hand, "I was scared, okay..." She mumbled, hugging him tightly, "That's why I...haven't gotten a divorce but I-I want one so I can marry you...I love you...h-he said he'd kill me if I..."

"I love you too," He mumbled and kissed her forehead, "You're beautiful, you're everything to me. I'll get you that divorce if you promise to marry me, Maria." He looked down at her and she glanced at James but he tilted her face back to him, "And I'll adopt Susan."

"Yay!" Susan shouted making both of them chuckle. He turned her head up and Maria closed her eyes, letting him kiss her as softly as he always did.

They pulled away and she nodded slowly, "Okay..." She brought her hands up and cupped his face as the tears kept flowing, "O-Okay..." Apparently, he did know that.
