Trigger Warning: Death

Eliza sat down on her chair, looking at her hand in disdain. On the back of her hand stood the number one. It was her rate, her number, she was the number one most powerful person in the world but nobody knew her power. In this world if you killed somebody you got their rank, people were always after her life. Each month there was a new number two as the old was murdered but Eliza wasn't nervous, she knew she'd be fine.

Eliza had an unconventional power, every single person she came into contact with wanted to be her friend.  That sounds like fun, it sounded good, doesn't it? It wasn't. She had almost no friends, no real friends, only her sisters, she wanted friends. Her power wasn't conscious, it always happened unconsciously and she had absolutely no control over it.

Eliza sat back and looked through her phone, it appeared the last number two died last night. Who was the new one? She looked through to find a man named John André? She looked at his picture, a man with fair skin and brown hair pulled into a ponytail. After they climbed to number two they came for her so she read up on his power, what...people say psychological powers don't work on him? Her power was classified as psychological. Scratch the earlier thing about her not being nervous.

Eliza texted her sisters explaining the situations but just as she pressed send to Angelica the door flew open and she screamed. A man walked in, the man from the picture, so she ran to her room, "Running won't help, One!"

She ran through to the window and jumped out of it onto the fire escape. Most people would go down but she climbed up knowing he would be a bit confused. She climbed higher and higher until she sat on the highest level of the fire escape, gasping for breath. She knew he was after her life so the feeling of panic and fear was as valid as it any other.

"Are you okay?" Eliza screamed and looked at the voice to see another man with his brown hair pulled back though his skin had a tan, "Whoa-Whoa-Are you okay?" She realized he had opened his window, he lived on the top level.

"No-Hi-Can I come inside?" He nodded and helped Eliza through the window into his apartment as she almost collapsed into his arms. Her body felt tired and her emotions, heart, and mind were exhausted. She knew she shouldn't take advantage of her power but she had to or she might actually die.

"Number one?" He looked at her hand and she nodded, sitting down wherever he had sat her at, "What's your power? Always wanted to know." He sounded patient and just interested plus he saved her so she had no qualms about him.

Eliza didn't know why she trusted him actually but she wanted somebody to unload to, somebody to be like her friend, "It's psychological." She mumbles and let her head roll back, "Sorry I don't usually exercise or anything." She told him.

The man smiled, "I'm Alexander by the way and I'm not affected by those powers." He told her and she stared at him in fear, "Don't worry. I don't engage in that idiotic ritual of hunting other humans. I have the lowest number." He showed her his number, she only caught it was over seven billion before she stopped reading the number, "I'll go get you some water?"

"Please," Eliza smiled at him, "Oh and my name is Elizabeth but I go by Eliza. Can I call you Alex?" She didn't want to say Alexander every time she spoke to him because it sounded so formal and unnatural, "And can we be...friends? I don't uh..I don't have any."

Alexander smiled and nodded, "Of course. I'll go grab that water." He hugged her for a split second before leaving her on the couch. Eliza smiled and got up, drawing the curtains and locking the windows in the room before sitting back down as Alex came, "Number two is after me." She told him. She didn't know when people began to stop being affected by psychological powers but apparently, they did, maybe she could train it to be stronger?

"I'll keep you safe, I promise." He handed her the water and watched her drink it slowly as he spoke, "I can shapeshift but because I don't engage in fighting for a special overglorified number I got a really low one and I'm okay with that."

"Oh, I was born with this number." She looked at her hand, "My power is that no matter what people become my friend or want to. It's why I have no friends, they're only nice because of my power and not because they actually want to be friends with me from their heart. People have broken into my house and then apologized and left their number after they came into contact with me since that's how it works. I guess I have to train it harder to keep myself alive since it didn't affect John André, number two."

Alex looked interested and nodded, "I guess so. That sounds really hard but I promise I can help you train yourself. We can go on walks and have you focus on changing people's minds, maybe then you'll learn to control it too." He smiled kindly and Eliza grinned knowing that it might work, hope filled her for the first time in a long time.

The feeling that settled between Alexander and Eliza didn't last though because John André broke the window and Alex got up between him and Eliza, "Is this your boyfriend, one?" He looked at Alex's wrist and began to laugh, raising his hand for what Eliza assumed was some kind of blast or something nerdy like that but he never got to do it. Alex shifted into a koala which made John André laugh again until he used his razor-sharp teeth to sever an artery. Eliza screamed and ran back as Alex shifted back and ran to her, watching him bleed out, "People underestimate koalas." He mumbled and took her from the room quickly, his huge number dwindling into just the number two since he killed two, "They're still bears."

Eliza nodded and walked to the dining room with him, still in shock. When she sat down again she looked at him and quietly asked, "Why'd you...he was going for me so..?"

Alex smiled and put a piece of bread in front of her, "I said I'd protect you. Now eat the bread, it'll help with the shock."
