There were three knocks at his bedroom door.
Don't come in here. Don't look at me.
The knocks didn't come again but Oikawa could tell someone was still outside his door.
He had managed to calm himself down for the most part, even though it was now dark out. He had expected his three guests to leave but he hadn't heard the front door. Why are they still here? To mock me?
Three knocks again.
Oikawa stood up from where he had pushed himself into a corner, his legs felt like jelly but atleast he could breathe again.
Opening the door and not seeing Iwaizumi was a surprise.
"Oikawa." Hanamaki politely bowed, as if thanking him for something. Is he making fun of me? "can i come in?"
There were a lot of things that could happen right now but he couldn't name a single one. He couldn't think with the way Hanamaki's gaze was unrelenting, training his eyes to Oikawa's every movement.
"Uhm...okay." Oikawa wondered when his mum will be home as the clock turned to eight and Hanamaki settled himself in Oikawa's desk chair.
"I'm so sorry about bef-"
"You're very pretty Oikawa."
Oikawa was sttunned into silence. No one had ever called him pretty before. No one had ever atuck around long enough to actually see him.
"And don't apologise. It was a panic attack right? Sorry if us being here all of a sudden made you panic. It was my fault. Iwaizumi wasn't planning on coming today but I think i lost my mind a little...can i tell you a secret?"
Oikawa gulped then nodded, his head was fuzzy, he knew whatever words he would be able to force out wouldn't make sense but he wanted this cute boy with the uneven bangs to carry on.
"Iwaizumi really likes you Oikawa. And me and Mattsun really like him. I was scared...i- you would take him away from us." Now he gets it.
"I understand." He needed to make himself scarce, not answer the door or his dm's. He needed to be out of the way, he needed-
"But," Hanamaki looked down at his hands. Oikawa could hear the kettle boiling downstairs. "That's not the case anymore."
"Huh?"
"I want to see you more..." Hanamaki waited. He wanted Oikawa's first name. It sent a shiver through him.
"Toru."
"Toru. I want to see you more. And so does Matsukawa." It was hard to comprehend. They wanted to see him. No one ever stuck around, especially not after witnessing his panic attacks.
But these people. Iwaizumi, who came back, Matsukawa, who apologised even though he didn't need to, Hanamaki, who came to him first.
"Why?" It was hard to believe.
"Because, Oikawa, you're quite the Character." Well, that was one way to put it.
"Even after that?" His heart was pounding in his chest but, for once, he felt safe.
"Yes. oikawa. Don't think that makes you any different, any less likeable." How can he when that's all he's ever thought? "You're quite extroadinate."
Extroadinate, pretty, likeable.
A blush rose to his cheeks. Maybe Iwaizumi coming back into his life was the best thing to happen to him.
"Hey, Oikawa, can i ask you a question?" Hanamaki was back to looking at him, he welcomed it this time.
"Sure"
"Why haven't you been in school?" Oh.
For some reason, he trusted this guy, this person who told him how amazing he was, this person who didn't shun him for things he couldn't control, this person who hasn't given up on him just yet.
"I was diagnosed with a panic disorder when i was fourteen, and, well, it got so bad that at one point i found myself to anxious to even leave the house." Hanamaki was silent, taking in the words. Listening.
"I'm sorry. That must be really hard on you." It was. "So that's why you had that panic attack?"
"Yeah."
"Why'd you offer to go if you knew you couldn't?" He wasn't judging him, Oikawa could tell by the man's soft features, he was merely curious, merely trying to understand Oikawa.
"I didn't want to be a bad host." His voice was small, waiting for the judgement.
"Oikawa..." Hanamaki stood up, coming close to Oikawa and putting his hands softly on the boy's shoulders. "You are more than perfect. Don't push yourself if you know it's gonna hurt you."
Oikawa's heart skipped a beat, his face heating up as he bought a hand up and placed it over Hanamaki's arm, simply just wanting to touch him.
"I- thank you." Hanamaki smiled and it was the most beautiful thing Oikawa had ever seen. "Can you...never mind."
Hanamaki squeezed Oikawa's shoulder slightly, he smiled softly, tilting his head.
"What is it?"
"Can you stay?" Hanamaki nodded, no hesitation, taking his hands off Oikawa's shoulders but staying close.
"Ofcourse."
"Thank you."
"I'm going back downstairs, you coming or do you want to stay up here?" Hanamaki kept his tone soft, they were talking quietly, practically hushed whispers. They were so close that they didn't need to talk loud. They were in their own little space. Oikawa was happy.
"Can i come with you?"
"Mhm!" Hanamaki took Oikawa's hand, leading him out of the room and down the stairs where Iwaizumi and Matsukawa were sat at the kitchen table. Iwaizumi had a tea, Matsukawa had a water. They looked happy enough, comfortable enough. Oikawa felt himself calm down.
"Sorry about before."
"No need, it's okay." Iwaizumi smiled at him, Matsukawa doing the same.
"I made you some tea toru." Iwaizumi moved to the microwave where a cup of camomile tea had been warmed.
"Thanks. Hajime." The two didn't comment on how Oikawa and Hanamaki were holding hands, they didn't seem to care.
Oikawa, for the first time ever, felt like he was at home. He was okay with these people, he was safe and loved, and he still had a very long way to go but atleast now, he didn't have to do it alone.
