All four of them had worked together to decorate Oikawa's house.

They bought a massive Christmas tree, well, Hanamaki asked his parents to buy him one and they obliged.

Oikawa had never had a Christmas tree before. His father always worked over Christmas and his mother didn't want to spend money on something that 'only comes once a year'.

Oikawa had told her that her argument was stupid and she had huffed and sent him to his room.

He'd never seen so many lights and baubles. He'd never felt this warm at Christmas.

His family never really celebrated it at all, they'd give him a new hoodie on the day but it wasn't an occasion to really look forward to, it never meant anything special to him.

Not until he was decorating the tree with Iwaizumi, not until Matsukawa jokingly put a mistletoe up in the doorway for when Hanamaki got back from buying some milkbread.

When Hanamaki came back, Oikawa was by the door, Hanamaki laughed and kissed his cheek before handing him the milkbread. Hanamaki always made his chest feel warm.

Iwaizumi came over to see what was taking so long for Oikawa to get back and once he saw the mistletoe he laughed aswell and kissed his other cheek. Iwaizumi always made his heart feel warm.

Matsukawa came to see what Iwaizumi was laughing about, and him being the one to put the mistletoe there saw it as his perfect opportunity to kiss Oikawa on the forehead. Matsukawa always made his face feel warm.

As a whole, they showed him a new warmness he wasn't used to and yet he welcomed it with open arms.

With Oikawa burning a bright red, Iwa and Mattsun grabbed one of his hands each and pulled him to the living room where Hanamaki was stringing up lights.

"You okay Kawa?"

"Yes Taka, just fine." Hanamaki smiled at him, there was music playing softly in the background and Matsukawa and Iwaizumi hadn't let go of his hands.

Hanamaki came over and finding there was no hand to hold, he wrapped his arms softly around Oikawa's waist, nuzzling his head into the brunette's chest.

"We're proud of you Kawa." He felt a squeeze of his hands, looking to Iwaizumi who nodded with a soft smile and Matsukawa who gently caressed the back of his hand with his thumb.

This was what home felt like.

"Thank you guys, really, thank you." It was silent afterwards, the only noise being the music in the background as always forever by the cults played. It was Hanamaki's playlist and through it, Oikawa had found out just how much of a romantic the man was.

Oikawa rested his head down on Hanamaki's shoulder, revelling in the softness of the boy's fleece hoodie and the tickle of his hair against Oikawa's temple.

It was peaceful, but then it was broken.

A knock came from the door, Matsukawa moved to answer it, knowing Oikawa wouldn't want to.

Standing at the door was a serious looking man and a police man. Matsukawa furrowed his brows and turned to Oikawa who had the same expression on his face.

"Hi there, I'm looking for Oikawa Toru." The man flashed an id card, Matsukawa being the only one who recognised it. "I'm Sugawara Koushi. Child protective services."

Oikawa stepped towards the door, his original anxiety replaced with confusion, worry.

"Can i please speak to Oikawa Toru?" Oikawa walked up next to Matsukawa who put a gentle hand on his back.

"That's...me. What's- what's up?"

"Oikawa. When was the last time you saw your mother?" The air grew uneasy , Matsukawa's hand tensed on Oikawa's back.

"Uhm...I think it's been a couple months now." His voice was small, practically a mumble but Suga still caught it.

"Can you give me a specific date?" Oikawa wasn't really sure, he did recall a conversation, she had called saying that she would be home late, she must've slipped in while he was asleep because he hadn't seen her after that.

"Well...I don't know. We talked briefly on the phone towards the end of September. That's the last time we spoke."

Iwaizumi stepped forward, eyebrows furrowed. "What's going on?"

Suga ignored him, keeping his attention directed at Oikawa.

"Have you tried to contact her since?"

"No...I'm used to her just coming and going. The longest she has been gone is two weeks at most though..."

"Can you try and contact her now?" Why hadn't he tried to call his mother? Oikawa felt bile rise in his throat, was he a bad son?

He had been so concentrated Iwaizumi, makki and mattsun, he had been so concentrated on gaining his confidence back. He hadn't even considered the fact that maybe his mother wasn't coming back this time.

"Oh...Okay. I-i guess so." Oikawa invited them into the house and then went to his room, deciding to do this privately. He never called his mother, she hated it, he didn't want an audience to his berating if she did answer.

The phone didn't even ring. 'The number you are trying to reach is out of service'

He tried again. 'The number you are trying to reach is-' he cut the call.

Oikawa sauntered down the stairs, all eyes on him as he reached the bottom.
He had two options here and he didn't even hesitate.

"She picked up. Said that she had been trying to find time contact me but her work is very demanding. She said she'll be back within the week."

Oikawa didn't dare to meet the eye of Suga, too scared that it would break his resolve. He was already trying to get over the fact that he didn't know this person who was in his house. Iwaizumi, Hanamaki and Matsukawa had been trying to help him get used to new people.

"Oh, well alright then. Sorry to bother you, we'll be on our way, please, have a merry Christmas." Suga turned to leave, jotting some things down before something struck in Oikawa.

"Wait!" It startled all of them, Oikawa was always so calm. "How did you know my mum wasn't here?" Oikawa noticed that Hanamaki had come to stand by him, his nerves calming.

"Oh, it was an anonymous tip so I'm sorry but I don't know. We'll be checking in when your mother is back."

Crap. Clearly he should've hesitated when choosing his options. He knew that his mother wasn't coming back.
