"So...How's Oikawa doing?"
"He's alright. Why?"
"Just wandering. He's still living at home?"
"Yeah...why wouldn't he be?"
"Well his mother left, didn't she?"
"How did you know about that??"
Iwaizumi gaped at his mother from across the dinner table, she didn't seem phased. "Oh well, you know."
No, he didn't know. He hadn't told his mother about Oikawa's, Oikawa had asked them all not to tell anyone. Had his mother talked to her? "uhm...no I don't."
Iwaizumi's mum huffed before collecting her finished dishes together and moving them to the sink. Iwaizumi was waiting for her to say something, something to ease him like she usually did. But she didn't. Her movements were stiff, telling.
"Mum...what did you do?"
"I was doing it for him Hajime!"
"Mum!"
"I was the one that called social services!" Iwaizumi stood from his seat, his mouth agape, eyebrows furrowed. The anonymous tip, it was her. How could he possibly start to tell Oikawa that?
"B-but, why? I..."
"That poor boy! I knew her plan all along, I tried to tell her not to go but she- she doesn't listen! And that poor boy!...A child needs their mother Hajime. She's gone...I thought I was doing the right thing, I-...I don't know..." Iwaizumi's mother sank down into her previous seat at the table, looking up at Iwaizumi, her eyes pleading for understanding.
"Do you know how much he has suffered because of this?! Mum I get it but...Sometimes some people just aren't meant to be mothers...sometimes some kids are better off without."
It was silent apart from his mother's occasional sniffles, he understood her motive, but was a child's home really better?
"But him being home alone..."
"He's not alone...he has me, and Hanamaki and Matsukawa...A-and he'll be going back to school in January so he won't be home alone much and it's not like she was around much before anyway."
"ugh...I really messed up didn't I Hajime?" His mother ran her hands through her hair, ruffling up her loose waves, strands sticking out as she carded her fingers through in distress. "I just...I wish there was something I could do..."
Iwaizumi recalled a conversation he had with Oikawa a while ago. It was a longshot but it could work.
"I Don't know what to do Iwa-Chan...Sugawara-san is gonna keep checking in...i don't- ugh..."
"well, there is something..." Iwaizumi sat down in his seat and placed a hand over his mother's that she had placed down on the table. "Just please...think about it."
"Well...what is it?"
"Once a week could you...pretend to be Oikawa's mother to the social worker when he checks in..."
Iwaizumi felt his mother's hand stiffen under his, her face tightening into a frown, her delicate features turning serious, etched with her age.
"Hajime...I don't know..."
"Please! it's the least you could do! Please mum, just consider it. We have time since Sugawara-san is waiting for Oikawa's cold to blow over to check in again."
"Hm...Okay I'll...think about it. Now! I don't want to hear any more of this until I have my answer."
"Okay." Iwaizumi hesitantly took his hands off his mother's and went to his room, sighing as he closed the door, resting his back against it. Now he would have to have the whole conversation with Oikawa about his mother being the one who called child protective services. He'd also have to get Oikawa to go along with the plan...If the plan was actually going to go into action that is. He couldn't believe this.
Iwaizumi flopped down on his bed just as his phone buzzed with a text.
'Hiro (。•́︿•̀。)'
'Yo Zoomi, I'm at Kawa's, him and Mattsun are asleep, you coming over tn?'
Iwaizumi sighed into his pillow, he was exhausted, he missed them but...
'srry not tn (っ- ‸ - ς)'
Iwaizumi shut his phone off, pressing his face down into his pillow and closing his eyes. He didn't mean to fall asleep just yet but he felt himself being pulled into a slumber. He wondered if his mum was okay and he wondered if his dad heard any of the conversation from his study. He wondered what Hanamaki and Matsukawa and Oikawa were doing right now. He fell asleep.
-
"Issei." Hanamaki shook Matsukawa awake gently and handing him a fresh coffee as the boy started to wake up. "Jime isn't coming over tonight, it's just us three." Hanamaki placed a kiss on Matsukawa's forehead and he instantly returned it with a kiss to Makki's cheek.
"God, sleeping sitting up. Never doing that again." Hanamaki chuckled as Matsukawa stretched before taking a sip of his coffee and humming in satisfaction.
"So, fill me in on what's happened while I was at tutoring."
"oh well...Kawa had a bad panic attack. I don't know why, he's been sleeping it off for a few hours now." Hanamaki frowned, changing from his crouching position to sitting, legs crossed as he faced Mattsun.
"hm." He looked down at his feet before looking over at Oikawa, noticing his blotchy red cheeks and the way his forehead naturally creased in his sleep. "That's not good. Where you there?"
"No I was out getting him medicine. Had to come in through the back door, he was lay down in front of the main one." They were mumbling to each other, only just making out the worry in each other's eyes through the dark of Oikawa's room. "I feel bad. Should've been there."
"Hey," Hanamaki took Matsukawa's free hand, kissing his knuckles and smiling softly at him. "It's oaky, how could you have known? It's nobody's fault."
"Heh, yeah, thanks Taka...I love you." Matsukawa took another sip of his coffee and squeezed Hanamaki's hand.
"I love you too."
