Chapter 16

I'm So Tiered (And I'm Letting You Rest)

Lucy swore she was touching the actual surface of the sun, if the way the sunrays filtering in through the cabin's windows burned along her skin was any indication. She could actually feel her skin become a dark red without any mirror in sight. But did she move away from the sunrays? No. She guessed that that was what had woken her in the first place, what had disturbed her dreamless slumber. But despite the constant burn, it felt nice.

Natsu shifted behind her, effortlessly moving her along with his movements. He had attached himself to her back sometime under the night and doesn't seem to be letting go any time soon. She rolled over on her back, chuckling when Natsu's head landed just above her chest, tickling her neck. She blinked, dragging her eyelids slowly down and then back up with fluttering eyelashes as she rolled her head away from Natsu and up to the ceiling. Say what you want about the rest of the cabin, but Lucy thought the ceiling was beautiful; constellation carvings of all the constellations and small random unknown stars littered the rotting wood. The work didn't look well done, maybe carved with a knife that had dug too deep in some places and too shallow in other's which had—in most places—ruined the wood completely. Lucy thought the imperfections was what made it beautiful.

Natsu shuffled beside her, she imaged him looking adorable with his sleepy eyes and bedhead, but still, she didn't look away from the ceiling.

"Hey," she heard him whisper.

She smiled softly, tracing the Libra constellation with her eyes. She rolled over and met Natsu's eyes, loving the way his hair stood even more on-end than usual.

"Hey." she whispered back.

Lucy could almost see his soul in his answering smile. Soft, and just a little bit crazy. It made her heartbeat just a fraction faster.

"This is cozy," she chuckled.

"Yeah, extremely." he laughed, sarcastically. "You know, it kind of reminds me of the apartment we had in that small village near Cedar. Man, that place was a dump!"

"Yeah, now that you mention it; it does look like that apartment!" her smile fell playfully off her face, turning to Natsu. "And it wasn't a dump, it was cheap and comfy."

A laugh escaped him, and she quickly shoosed him, looking worryingly towards their sleeping friends.

"Come on! Look at this place; It's exactly like that apartment!"

He referenced to the rest of the cabin. She laughed quietly, following his hand with her eyes. Slowly her laughter seemed to fall deeper into a hole, burying it as it died off. She quickly looked away from the black marks on the wall.

Natsu inhaled slowly, "It's not your fault, Luce."

She blinked away the wetness that suddenly appeared.

She laughed, and it sounded painfully fake, even to her own ears, "I can't hide anything from you, do you know how annoying that is?"

His eyes narrowed. She sucked her under lip between her teeth and looked away from his judging expression when his eyes hardened with the motion, stupid habit.

"This isn't a joke, Lucy." he said gently.

She spluttered slightly, "I know!" her voice lowered after the exclamation, and she looked back up at him. "I just don't know how I should react."

"We'll figure it out together. Just remember to talk to me, okay?"

Lucy's smile fell flat, "I'll try,"
