Chapter 17
All That I know Is That I'm Breathing
After everything they've gone through since the bomb went off in the guild, Lucy had always wondered if there was some bigger, horrifying reason for it all. After everything that had happened, with Rouge and Emma attacking them, people going crazy, bombs filling Magnolia with a splattering of body parts, fake-Erza, the shadow, the list was endless of all the weird shit that had happened to them after the first damn bomb went off. And honestly, Lucy was scared.
The mall they had been stuck in to avoid the rain hadn't been ideal, but it had done its job, leaving them completely dry when they scurried out the building at first sign of the rain letting out. The mall had been surprisingly empty of people, not one possessed person in sight. Even the streets they walked on, or the bridges they carefully strolled over, hadn't had a single person. The houses hovered over them like they've done something horribly wrong, and Lucy was convinced there was some scaly monster lurking under the bridges' dark water.
Lucy twisted her hand in Natsu's grip, eyeing the bridge they were walking over with distaste. She was seriously forming a phobia of them at this point. His fingers felt rough and used as she unconsciously played with them, her eyes rooming the murky water with distrust.
"Hey, so," she glanced at the water one last time as they stepped off the bridge, before she looked up at Natsu. "Where exactly did you hide our kids? You haven't mentioned it,"
Natsu stared owlishly down at her for a solid second before the question seemed to click in his head, "Oh! Yeah, they're at Tenrou Island." he shrugged.
Sweat quickly began running down her face, pulling her hand roughly from his, "You left them at Tenrou Island? What were you thinking?"
His hand gently pulled back to his side where she had left it, his brows furrowed and his eyes distant as he thought. The sudden recognition that filled his expression made Lucy rethink her life choices. "No, no, they're not alone. They're with Master Mavis. It was her idea anyways."
Lucy felt her shoulders drop in relief, and she grabbed for his hand again, "Oh, why didn't you say so?"
Natsu's fingers hovered over the top of her hand, her palm splayed comfortably in his, his voice quiet, "I didn't think I'd need to."
His finger engulfed her hand, warming it and before she knew it, they were walking again, their hands swaying between them.
"Natsu?" she asked. He looked at her from the corner of his eyes, a small smile splayed on his lips. "What did you mean earlier?"
His breath pulled quickly inwards, choking in his chest, his eyes disappearing from her eyesight.
"Lucy," he breathed deeply in once before continuing. "Do we really have to do this now?"
She brought her free hand to his shoulder, squeezing it, "Of course, we do. No better time than the present, right?"
He turned to her, smiling softly, "Yeah, I guess so—"
Natsu's whole body seized up, frozen, when he cut himself off, his eyes rolling from one side to the other, his head moving to listen to their surroundings. Lucy dropped his hand, walking closer to him.
"Natsu, what do you hear?"
With his pupils in slits, green eyes looking menacing and frightening in the ever-growing fog, he stood still, staring intensely at the street in front of them.
"Screaming."
Not a second later a hair-raising scream bounced from building to building, surrounding them, until it slowly died, leaving an ethereal silence. Almost like the scream left something behind as it faded out. Ice flew through Lucy like a cold storm, filling her with dread and it wasn't long before another scream echoed around them. Eyes wide with horror, Lucy looked to Erza, who immediately motioned for them to run. And they did. Following the eerie screams around corners, over bridges and down streets, was easy, the loud and thrill sound almost deafening the closer they came.
