Nikki: "So our team won tonight. I helped Caleb get back on the bus. The football coach told me I could ride with Caleb back to the hotel. I can't believe he's going to be out for ten weeks, or even longer before they can tell when the concussion will go away. After we pulled up at the hotel, we saw an ambulance waiting.
I helped Caleb into the back of the ambulance and quickly ran up to my room to drop off his bag. Then I made it back to the ambulance and jumped in the back with him. I helped keep him awake as we made our way to the hospital. They rolled him inside, and I sat in the waiting room. After what felt like forever, I looked up, and the doctor was standing in front of me."
Doctor: "Hey, Nikki. We wanted to let you know we did the X-rays. When Caleb landed on his right leg, he fractured it in several places. He will need to do rehab. There was some bleeding and swelling, he is in a coma right now, but we stopped the bleeding and gave him something stronger for the swelling. He's in a room now, resting. You can go see him, but he'll probably have to stay overnight."
Nikki: "Thank you so much, doctor." He nodded in response. After the lady at the front desk gave me his room number, I found it. When I opened the door, I saw Caleb hooked up to various machines, his head wrapped in bandages. I was so confused by all the wires. I couldn't believe he was in a coma. I started crying again and couldn't stop until I eventually fell asleep with tears still falling from my eyes.
When I woke up, I saw the nurses had come in and changed his bandages and replaced the wires. I began calling our parents and Madison. After they picked up, I started telling them the story. Before I could tell them I was at the hospital with Caleb, they all burst into tears. I was pretty sure my eyes were swollen from all the crying. I told our parents not to make Madison drive them up here. I didn't want to put that responsibility on her, so I promised to keep everyone updated.
I turned my camera around so they could see Caleb in bed, which seemed to calm them down. Shortly after, I hung up and checked the time—it was 1:00 am. I went back to sleep. After a long nap, it was 10:00 am. The nurses had brought me breakfast from the cafeteria. I ate it all; I guess I was starving because I cleaned my plate in less than an hour. I sat by Caleb's bed. The doctor told me he was responding well to the medications.
But the doctor also mentioned that his football career could be over. I was in shock. Then I saw Caleb open his eyes a little. 'Caleb,' I screamed softly. I hugged him gently and began crying again. 'I'm so happy you are awake.'"
