"hold up!" feldman and i practically catch corey from falling off his stool, "you can't just go over there and talk to river phoenix!"
"why not?" haim asks, readjusting the collar of his shirt.
"because! what're you gonna say, hey river, big fan. totally lame, bro!"
"i don't know what i'm gonna say, but i'd never forgive myself if i don't talk to him in this very moment."
"kennedy?" feldman looks to me for help.
"he's right. we have to at least say hi. it's not like we're going to tell him all about what happens in 5 years! we're just ... saying ... hi." i emphasize my last words.
the three of us begin to make a beeline straight for river. we're all fixing our appearances while we walk as if he's some sort of god.
but then again, he kind of is.
"ah, ah, ah!" michael quickly stands up from the table, blocking the three of us from our mission, "where do you think you're going?"
"to play poker." feldman gives him a smile.
"poker? the three of you? you'd be out a hundred grand in 30 seconds."
"give us your sunglasses, they'll never see us bluffing." haim tries to reach for michael's blacked out glasses, but he swats his hand away.
"river phoenix is over there." i whisper.
"oh, i see," michael smiles, "big fans, huh?"
the three of us nod our heads profusely.
"you guys better keep it classy with him. if anyone sees you treating him like you aren't equals, your status' could drop once it hits the news."
"we will! promise!" haim exclaims before placing his hands on my shoulders, guiding me away from michael.
"i'm nervous." i whine as we continue to make our way over.
it's dark inside the bar with only the dimmed overhead lights on the ceiling helping us to see.
"you kids heading over to play some poker?" a man towers over us just as we're so close to the roped off area.
"oh, yeah." feldman confidentially pops his chest out.
"how about i play with you? give you some tips and tricks? especially you, young lady." the guy's eyes land directly on me, "what's your name?"
"kennedy!" haim whispers harshly, "he's leaving!"
"kennedy, huh?" the older man repeats my name, but we're all focused on watching river walk out of the bar, "that's a pretty name-"
"go, kennedy, go!" haim shoves me towards the exit, "save yourself!"
