"look, i don't wanna be that guy, but ..."
"but you're going to be." i finish the rest of his sentence for him.
"i get it, it's safe with me because i'm not going to shove a camera in your face or flip out over you being here, but you should really think about going back home."
i let out a sigh of annoyance as i refuse to make eye contact with him.
it's been a good hour of us sitting here and talking in his car, which has become so hot from the sun beating in on us through the windows. but no amount of sun burning my skin would be enough to make me want to go home.
we're parked along the side of the road facing the hollywood sign, a request made by me. i wanted to come here since this was where i had my last normal moment with corey; before the viper room and before i made it back home.
"michael and i don't mind you house hopping between the two of us, but ... but your mom-"
i scoff, interrupting him, "you should've seen the look on my mom's face when she picked up me up from the airport. she thought the five missed calls to her cellphone prior were spam. that, or she was losing her mind. she lost her husband and then for a good couple months she thought she lost me too. it's probably better that i'm not home."
"kennedy, i think we've all lost our minds a little bit from all of this." he says, shifting his sitting position so he's more comfortable behind the wheel. "but it's not your fault. what happened, all of it, it's not your fault. no one can blame you for this."
i continue to stare out the front windshield of his car. i trace the letters of the hollywood sign with my eyes for the fifth time.
"imagine when river pops up, wherever he is, when he surfaces the world is gonna have a field day with that."
"the founders have him." i say, which causes his light colored eyes to dart over to mine. "i saw him. i'm not gonna say he's alright because i don't know if he is, but apparently they're gonna help him not be so confused. i mean, how do you console someone when they've time travelled, in the blink of an eye, 26 years ahead in the future?"
"i can imagine he's very confused." he nods his head while staring up at the ceiling of his car.
i narrow my eyes at him, "what is it?"
"what?"
"you're talking in that detached tone you always use when you're too busy thinking of something else."
"no i'm not." he shakes his head, grabbing the back of his head rest with his hands as he stretches.
"yes you are, tell me." i demand, sitting up straighter so i can face him.
"i just can't believe some stranger, well you're not a stranger anymore, but you were at the beginning of all this! i can't believe who you've become, what you mean to me now."
