It was Wednesday the third day of school at Endsbrooke high school. I had to admit that the kids here were all very friendly. I had yet to meet anyone that wasn't friendly and helpful; which was a bit strange for a high school. Though I had to remember it was only my third day at this school, still plenty of time for their true colors to come out. Dad had let Evie drive us to school today and thanks to her very speedy driving we made it to school with plenty of time.
I was sitting in world history talking to York and a friend of his named Miles before class started. "So I know you're Emmy, and you're sixteen,"
I cut him off, "Almost seventeen," I stated.
He nodded, "Almost seventeen, but what else is there to know about Emmaline Cox?" Miles asked leaning on my desk.
"Well, what do you want to know?" Miles was only a little bit taller than me but he was very built. He had his black hair cut short so it wasn't in his face and dark blue eyes looked like they were always smiling
"Oh you know the usual; do you like long walks on the beach at midnight, do you like drinking Pina coladas and getting caught in the rain?" He smiled down at me mischievously.
"What are you some sort of dating service?" York snorted and smacked Miles across the head.
"Hey those are all legitimate questions. So what about it doll face?" I laughed and York smacked him over the head again.
"Let's see; I love the beach so yes to the walks at midnight, I have never had a Pina colada before, and it depends who I'm caught in the rain with."
"Alright good answers!" Miles clapped his hands together happily.
"Yeah Ems except will have to fix the part about the Pina colada. I make a really good Pina Colada." York boasted.
"A virgin Pina colada?" I asked.
"What's the fun in that?" I gave him a severe look and he patted my head. "But for you yes I will make a virgin Pina colada." I smiled happily up at him. York was really starting to rub off on me; yes he was a flirt but he was also a genuinely nice guy and one that was fun to be around.
"Oh ok I've got another question!" Miles said excitedly.
"Ok shoot what is it?"
"Alright are you ready? This is the most important question." I nodded my head ready for anything he could throw at me. "Ok, do you eat your macaroni and cheese with a fork or a spoon?" He asked the question with such seriousness that I couldn't help but burst out laughing. "No I'm totally serious I need to know, this has been a question plaguing us for a long time. We've probably asked everyone we know this question, so what is it fork or spoon?" between my laughing fits I was able to get out, "fork I guess." York hooted in triumph and Miles looked downtrodden. "You failed me Ems you failed me."
"I'm guessing you eat it with a spoon Miles?" He nodded his head sadly.
"But were normal Emmy and eat it with a fork!" York rushed to me and picked me up, and started spinning me around while I was in his arms. "I knew we were compatible," he teased me as he continued to spin me around. I laughed and poked his side, "If you don't put me down I might throw up on you." York stopped spinning but continued to hold me above the ground in his arms. "Naw, I like you where you are right now." Suddenly there was a crash at the front of the room and a deep voice boomed, "PUT HER DOWN!" His voice was so loud it startled me and I jumped in York's arms. His grip on me tightened and he didn't put me down.
"Excuse me?" York's voice went down several notches and sounded threatening. I couldn't see the person he was talking to but the voice made the hairs on my arms stand up.
"I said put her down and I mean now." The stranger's voice was so commanding. York finally set me down but he quickly got in front of me, covering me from the stranger. Miles had gotten up from leaning on my desk and stood shoulder to shoulder covering me. I heard a loud growl that sounded a lot like the growl York had emitted but this was deeper and angrier.
"This isn't any of your business Ronan! So go buzz off and find someone else to boss around." York sounded so angry. Wait did he say Ronan? As in Ronan, Bea's brother, Ronan?
"She is my business, so stop blocking her from me." I peeked over their shoulders and saw one of the most beautiful boys I had ever seen. He was tall and well built, his eyes were a shimmering almost jade green and he had very light brown hair, almost gold, that curled loosely. He reminded me of a Greek statue. His glowing green eyes met mine and for a second I swear the world stopped. It was just him and me in the room, in the whole world. I finally snapped out of it and looked around all the kids in class were staring. Some of them were staring as if they had no idea what was going on like me and others looked on as if they were getting ready to stop a fight. Luckily Miss Willoughby picked the perfect time to walk into class; she stopped immediately taking in the scene.
"Is there a problem here gentlemen?" She asked an edge to her voice.
"No," both boys said at the same time not taking their eyes off each other.
"Good then you can take your seats," no one moved a muscle. "Now!" She ordered. "Or do I have to call in the principle?" That got everyone's attention and they all reluctantly took their seats.
The whole class was filled with a sort of nervous energy, every one's eyes kept darting between York, Ronan and myself. Something major had just taken place; I knew that much, but what it was I couldn't tell. I could say one thing about the kids at Endsbrooke High they were very dramatic. I could barely pay attention to anything Miss Willoughby said, I was too nervous and I didn't know why.
At the end of the lesson York and Miles were immediately by my side, "Come on Em will walk you to your next class ok?" York took my arm and started walking out.
"Is everything ok? What was that?" I asked referring to before class.
"Don't worry about it Emmy. Just some big tough guy who thinks he can boss us around," Miles voice was bitter as he spoke. "Just forget about him." But that was impossible, because as we stepped out of class York was suddenly flung against the wall.
"Hey!" I cried out as I looked at Ronan gripping York's shirt tightly. Before I could interfere Miles grabbed my arm keeping me from getting in the middle.
"How dare you keep her away from me!" Ronan yelled in his face. "Don't you ever do that again." York pushed Ronan away and threw a punch that Ronan quickly blocked. I tried to get away so I could stop them but Miles held strong, "Don't get in the middle of them." Miles whispered in my ears.
"But their fighting." I told him.
"They can handle themselves, trust me." I watched as the two boys scuffled in the hall trying to get a one over on the other.
"You don't even know her name; you have no claim over her!" York shouted.
"I have every claim to her, she's my ma-" Ronan was cut off by Miss Willoughby shouting. "Right that's it gentlemen! You are both coming with me to the principal's office."
"What?" They both said as they pulled apart.
"Yes for fighting in the hallway."
"We can handle this on our own." Ronan told her.
"Not here you can't, not without saying something you might regret in front of certain people." She grabbed their arms and started pulling them down the hall. I stared after them dumbly wondering what in the world just happened.
"What was that?" I asked Miles hoping to get a straight answer.
"Just two stupid male egos getting in the way of each other." Miles scoffed and started walking me down the hall to my next class.
"Does that happen a lot around here?"
"More than you know Ems, more then you know."
