Running Into York

Our first stop was to the office which was luckily right off the main corridor. A middle aged woman with graying hair sat behind a desk typing something rigorously on her computer. I cleared my throat and the woman looked up at us.

"Hi I'm Emmaline Cox and this is my sister Evelyn Cox. This is our first day and we were told this was where we should go to get our schedules." I told the secretary. She looked at me for a second seeming confused and then her face lit up.

"Oh yes you are our new students! I have your schedules right here, your parents signed you up a few weeks ago we've been expecting you." She chatted sweetly. She was filing through a stack of paper work trying to find ours. "Yes here you are, Evelyn here is yours," She handed me Evelyn's schedule. "And Emmaline here is yours." Evelyn was handed mine. When the secretary turned her back we quickly switched papers. Turning back around she handed us each a slip of paper that we had to get our teachers to sign and then return at the end of the day. "Now I think that is it," she looked at her watch. "You still have 15 minutes before classes start. Would you like help finding your first class?"

"Oh no thank you ma'am, I'm sure we can find our classes easy enough." Evie told her.

"Well, alright. Enjoy your first day of classes' girls." She smiled at us then went back to typing on her computer. "Thank you," we both called back before exiting the office.

"So, what do you have first Emmy?" Evelyn asked me. I looked down at my schedule reviewing it over in my head.

"World History, that's not too bad. What about you?" I asked as I looked up from my paper.

"Bleh I have trig first." I couldn't help but laugh at her. Math in the morning sucked. Evie stuck her tongue out me but laughed too. "Ok Emmy, let's go find our classes." She linked arms with me and we started walking down the halls ignoring the stares that were directed toward us.

"Remember just be yourself and try and make some new friends." She said to me as we drew close to her class.

"I know, I know." I sighed tired of hearing the same thing every time we started a new school. She pulled me to a stop and looked me in the eyes.

"I'm serious Emmaline. It's time to really start trying to make friends. I meant what I said; I do believe that we are going to stay here." I looked away and nodded my head; she patted my arm and walked into her class room saying, "have a good day."

I was looking for room 204 so I started up the long staircase keeping my head down to look where my feet were going. As I approached the top of the stairs I ran straight into a large body, I was about to fall backwards down the stairs when arms reached out and grabbed me. I was pulled forward into some ones arms before I could fall down the stairs.

"Oh god I am so sorry!" I heard a boy's voice say in my ear. "Are you ok?"

"Yeah I'm fine," I said as I pulled away from the boy. He was tall and thin but underneath his dark blue polo shirt I could see his arms were nicely defined. I looked up in his face and was met with a pair of chocolate brown eyes and dark eyebrows furrowed with concern, all underneath brown waving hair. "I'm sorry I wasn't watching where I was going." I told him. His eyes crinkled  and he laughed quietly, "It's alright neither was I." I smiled back at him but was at a loss as of what to say.

"I'm York by the way." He stuck out his hand for me and I took it, he had a nice firm handshake. "You're new here aren't you?" He cocked his head to the side with curiosity.

"I'm Emmaline but people call me Emmy. My family and I just moved to Endsbrooke a few days ago." I told him feeling a little self-conscious. York was looking down at me as if he was trying to study me and find out all of my secrets.

"I'm a junior, what grade are you in?" He asked conversationally as we stood on the staircase.

  "I'm a junior too."

"Awesome maybe we will have some classes together. Actually I'm sure we will have some classes together our junior and senior classes aren't very big this year. What's your first class then?" He asked.

"I have world history first." I tell him while double checking my schedule.

"Oh here let me see!" He said taking my schedule from me and looking at it, his eyes lit up. "Hey I have a few of these classes. World history, chemistry, and French 1 sweet! Come on I'll show you to world history." He started running up the stairs quickly and I had to take them two at a time just to catch up.

"York, wait up!" I called out to him; he laughed and looked back at me.

"Come on slow poke!" By the time I was at the top of the stairs I was winded and trying to catch my breath and York just laughed. "Our class is just right up here," He took my hand and pulled me along to the class room. I was a little surprised when he grabbed my hand, but I just shook it off as him being friendly. He let go as we entered the classroom and everyone turned to stare at us. York went to the back of the room and sat down next to a few boys who I assumed were his friends.

"You must be Emmaline Cox." The teacher said from behind her desk.

"Yes ma'am I am. I'm supposed to have you sign this for me," I gave her the slip from the office.

"I'm Miss Willoughby, glad you could join us Emmaline." She said as she signed my paper.

   "You can call me Emmy."

"Alright Emmy well you can find a seat anywhere there is one available." I thanked her and looked around trying to decide where to sit. I noticed York sitting in his seat flailing his arms around trying to get my attention he then patted the empty seat next to him. I smiled and went to sit next to him, glad to already have a friend.
