It was a large, dark gray wolf with a patch of white on his chest that stood out against his coal black eyes. It would have towered over a normal wolf, which made it all the more intimidating. It was panting heavily and its big paws were shifting against the grass. Its eyes were trained on one thing, Forrest. I was having a hard time catching my breath as I stared at the great wolf, I couldn't take my eyes off of it. I felt Forrest shift on top of me; he sat up and blocked my view of the wolf. I pressed my forehead against his back trying to catch my breath, I heard a rough growl leave the wolf and I jumped.

"Calm down," Forrest spoke forcefully to the wolf. What was he doing? Had he gone crazy, I don't think talking to a wolf would help us out of the situation. I peeked over Forrest's shoulder and caught sight of the wolf shaking and snarling. I watched in horror as the wolf stepped closer to us.

"Forrest we need to run," I said shakily. The wolf took another step towards us, Forrest let out a growl deep from in his chest, and it surprised me. Within the blink of an eye the wolf launched towards us jumping across the river, I was rooted to the ground in fear. I yelled for Forrest to watch out but instead of running he jumped towards the wolf. I panicked, what was he doing? He was going to get himself killed! Instead of watching Forrest get shredded to pieces I watched as he turned into a wolf himself. I closed my eyes not believing what I had just witnessed. There was absolutely no way I had just seen what I thought I saw. I heard snarling and splashing in the water, I opened my eyes and instead of finding a bloody and dying Forrest I found two giant wolves fighting each other in the water. A scream ripped from my mouth as I saw the scene in front of me, the dark gray wolf was now fighting a big dark brown wolf, they were matched in size, and they appeared to be matched in strength. My brain couldn't comprehend what was taking place in front of me. One second Forrest had been standing in front of me and now instead of Forrest there was a wolf in his place. I watched in shock as the two wolves battled each other, they rolled in the water nipping at each other and growling.

I took a step back and then another, but instead of rock under my feet I felt air, my hands flailed helplessly as I fell backwards into the frosty water. My head went under the surface and my body froze up, the water was so cold I couldn't move. When I resurfaced some of my senses came back to me, I saw the wolves still fighting just feet away from me. I started swimming towards the shore, hoping that neither wolf would take notice of me. When I felt ground under my feet I made a run for it. Tripping and stumbling I ran through the forest hoping I could find my way back. I could still hear the wolves fighting but it grew more distant the farther I ran; obviously they hadn't seen me get away. I ran as fast as my numb legs would carry me, the water was dripping down my back, the wind was blowing and causing shivers to run up and down my spine. I stumbled once and fell head over heels somersaulting across the forest floor. The wind had been knocked out of me and I lay sprawled out on the dirt looking up at the sky, I could have lain there longer if I hadn't heard a loud howl pierce the air. I gasped and got back to my feet continuing to run. Finally I saw the back of a brick house and knew that I would be safe, I ran around the house and up to the door banging on it. I was now sobbing uncontrollably, dripping wet, and covered in dirt and leaves.

"Em, is that you?" A voice from behind me said, I turned around and there to my utter relief was York. I ran to him and threw my arms around him crying into his chest. "Emmaline what happened? Why are you wet, where is Forrest?" His voice was alert and tense; I couldn't find the control I needed to explain what had just happened.

"York is everything alright?" A feminine voice said from the doorway of the house. I turned in York's arms to see Lydia there worrying her bottom lip. "Oh dear, Emmaline what's happened?" She came down the path towards us. I shielded my face in York's jacket and whispered the word I couldn't even imagine.
