The next day we all slept in late; it was almost noon by the time we were all up and able to communicate with the outside world. Mrs. Clark made us a brunch of bagels, eggs, sausage, and fruit salad and we all ate like we had never eaten before. It was just us girls at the table because everyone else had already eaten. Daphne mentioned a crazy dream she had that was about her going out with the elephant man and on their first date they went to the zoo. We all laughed and then Bea and Evie were both trying to remember their dreams. I stayed silent about my night not sure I was really ready to share that strange dream with anyone.
"So what are you girls going to do today?" Mrs. Clark asked once we were all finished eating and helping her with the dishes.
"I was thinking we could show Evie and Emmy the mall, what do you guys think?" Bea asked us.
"The mall sounds like fun, plus it would be handy to know where it is." Evie answered.
"Oh we could go shopping for homecoming dresses! You girls are going right?" Daphne asked. Homecoming? Neither my sister nor I had ever been to a school dance before.
"You should definitely both go!" Bea jumped up and down excitedly.
"We don't have dates," Evie said sounding unsure.
"So? We don't have dates either; we decided this year we were going to go with each other instead of boys. To be honest it's more fun that way. Even when we do have dates we spend more time with each other than with our dates." Daphne explained to us and Bea nodded in agreement.
"Ok then it sounds fun we can go as a big group," Evie decided then turned to me. "How about it Emmy, do you want to go?" I saw in her eyes my sister was begging me to go and I could never find it in me to let her down.
"Sure let's do it, we've never been to a dance before so it will be an experience." I looked over at my sister whose eyes were gleaming with happiness; it looked like this year she really would get the high school experience she always wanted.
After an hour we were all finally ready to head to the mall; as we were heading out of the house Ronan came rushing down the stairs stealing the keys from his sister.
"Hey! Come on Ro give those back," Bea huffed angrily.
"No, I'm going to drive you all to the mall and take the car to do some stuff. When you're ready to be picked up just shoot me a text." He didn't wait for a reply he just walked out the door towards the driver's side of their car.
"Fine," Bea said as we climbed in the car. "But no complaining about how long we're taking; we're looking for homecoming dresses so it might be a while." I saw Ronan's hands tighten on the steering wheel as he turned out of his drive way.
"Homecoming?' He asked tightly. I saw his sister put her hand on his arm and rub it soothingly.
"Yes, we're going as a group the four of us. We decided not to go with dates this year," Her voice took on a softer tone then she had before.
"Oh," Ronan visibly relaxed. "I like that plan, yeah that's a good plan." He mumbled to himself, and then looked in his rearview mirror at me. "Unless of course one of you wants me to take you?" He asked the whole car but I had a strange feeling that the question was directed towards me.
"No!" Bea nearly shouted and then turned towards us. "Girls we have to be strong and stick together. We have to promise that if a guy asks us to the dance we tell them no. Agreed?"
"Agreed!" Daphne was shaking her head violently up and down.
"Definitely," I had no problem agreeing with this plan.
