I forced myself out of bed and began making my way to the bathroom but before I could make it there my phone began to ring. Thinking that it could only be Eric calling this early I didn't bother to look at the caller ID.
“Please have good news for me. No bad news this early.” I said as my feet patted towards the bathroom.
“Good morning to you too.” I froze.
“Who is this?”
“You don't recognise the voice?” Of course I recognized the voice. I knew that voice from anywhere especially with that slight accent.
“How did you get my number? Know what don't answer that. I already know that Eric gave it to you.”
“Sounds as if you don’t want me to have your number.” I closed my eyes silently taking a deep breath.
“I didn't mean to offend you. I’m sorry, I just didn't expect you to get my number so quickly.” I placed Tammi on speaker and looked myself in the mirror. My fare carmel complexion was bright. No bags or dark spots. I truly looked better than I felt. Those long hours at work was taking a toll on me. I knew I needed a break but now was not the time to take one. We had so much to do. I needed more employees. I had two jobs lined up but had to finish the one me and my crew was on first.
“It’s okay.” Tammi said breaking me out of my thoughts.
“Eric told you what time I get up also?”
“No.” She said with humor in her voice. “It’s just something I remembered.”
“Something you remembered?” I asked confused.
“We’ve known each other for years Lynn. I use to stay over at you and Diana's house remember?”
“Oh right.” I smiled sheepishly. That also was a reminder that she use to date my best friend. “Tammi…” I heard as she sighed through the phone.
“I already know what you're going to say Lynn. I don't want you to say it because I don't want to hear it and I don't want to believe it.”
“What don't you want to believe?” I asked.
“That there can never be an us.”
“But there can’t be an us.”
“Yes it can.” I sighed.
“I have to go. I have a very busy day ahead of me.”
“Can I call you later?”
“It’s probably best if you didn't.”
“I’m going to call you later Lynn. Bye.” I smiled at Tammi's words. The women was so persistent, determined. I liked that. Not that I was going to give into the women but I liked that she wasn't giving up so easily.
Me and my team worked double hours that day to get the job done with hardly no break in between. I had to give my crew the next day off before getting to there next project the day after. That didn't apply to me though. I still had a lot of work to do. A lot of it was over the computer but it was still work. Work didn't stop for me. I decided to take my work home. I didn't want to fall asleep in the office again.
