Santana was standing in front of their school, blood dripping from the cut on her face.

Her first thought was for her friend.

"Luce, are you okay ?", she asked, her tone full of concern.

Usually Lucy would have nodded, looked at Santana, and caressed her cheek as a thank you.

But this time when she looked up, Lucy's gaze got stuck on the cut marring Santana's face.

"No," Lucy heard herself say. No hesitation apparent in her tone. No resentment.

For once, she was determined. She knew what she wanted. She knew what was right.

Enough was enough.

Her tone became steely, scarily matching her mother's. She barely recognized her voice when she spoke again.

"No, San. I am not okay. You could have become blind because of me."

Santana was just about to realize how deep the crack between them ran.

Taping it would not do this time. She tried nonetheless.

"That's nothing," she cooed. "In two days, I'll be as good as new."

Lucy was stubbornly avoiding her gaze, barely even looking at her. Never before had she reacted that way.

A sense of cold dread crept up Santana's spine.

On a whim, she reached for Lucy's cheek. The green-eyed girl jumped back as soon as Santana's fingers brushed her skin.

Santana froze.

A strangled sob escaped Lucy's throat, but funnily, when she looked up at her friend, her eyes were dry.

She was studying Santana's face like a piece of art, engraving her in her memory as if she'd never see her again.

Santana returned her friend's gaze, entering a state of shock as she refused to acknowledge what was happening.

"You've been hurt because of me," Lucy murmured, half-whispering.

"You've been hurt because of me," she repeated, louder, the same edge as before in her voice.

She paused, then, with the confidence of those who know something you don't.

"Never again."

Santana never knew how hard it was, at that moment, for Lucy to tear her eyes away from her. To will her body to move. Her legs to walk. Away.

Lucy walked until she was out of view. Only then did she start crying.
